3.6 Engine Tick

I was 7 quarts over (12 quarts total) on my new 3.6 install and took it on a 1560km highway trip to BC, going up several mountain passes there and back. I got home from the trip and dropped the oil for the first time when I found out the mistake.
Lots of top end and intake tube mess that the dealership took apart and cleaned up. I’ve put on just over 40k kms and all is quiet and strong!

Now THAT is over-filled! And I would be concerned. But the lower ends on these are built crazy strong and all I can think of is that the windage tray helped prevent the massive foaming that should have taken place in almost any other engine.
I'm afraid if I was doing an oil change and that much came out, my pan would overfloweth to a maximum degree.
It's just baffling that someone could possibly do that. It's not a diesel and I can't think of any automotive or pickup gas engine that requires that much.
All I can figure is they never drained the oil out - but then that would only account for 10 quarts total (or 11 at the most if they put in 6 on top of the proper 5 already in it)
Some people just shouldn't touch things mechanical.
With your luck, especially, it's amazing it's quiet and strong - no offense, but I'll never suggest you go buy a lottery ticket or bet on any horse, even one to lose.

We can confirm the engine holds 5 but it came with oil filled right up in the crate, I’ll guess 6 quarts and the tech dropped in 6 more. 6 is on the work order but this is the “upgrade engine” that only calls for 5. There is a TSB i saw recently on here that deals with the change of engine that had 6 quarts then changed to 5. Not enough of these techs are getting the memo to read the TSB on that.

We can confirm the engine holds 5 but it came with oil filled right up in the crate, I’ll guess 6 quarts and the tech dropped in 6 more. 6 is on the work order but this is the “upgrade engine” that only calls for 5. There is a TSB i saw recently on here that deals with the change of engine that had 6 quarts then changed to 5. Not enough of these techs are getting the memo to read the TSB on that.

I had an '07 6.0 Powerstroke I took in to the dealer for an oil change. When I started to leave out of the dealership it was running like crap so I circled the block and pulled back into the service entrance. I went and got the service manager and told him the truck was running fine when I brought it in. He jumped in the truck with me in the passenger side and he drove it about 1/4 mile and headed back to the dealership. He never said a word and dropped me at the entrance and drove the truck to the back of the service department where I couldn't really see what was going on.

There were several techs gathered around and the hood was up. Finally after about 20 minutes they brought my truck back to the front and told me it was resolved. One of the techs I knew came up and told me the oil change tech changed the filter, but failed to drain the oil and dropped another 15 quarts of oil on top of the old! I asked the tech how they drained the oil and he said the service manager had them pump the oil out of the dipstick with a pump.

At this point I twisted off on the manager! They were going to give me my truck with the new oil mixed with contaminated oil as well as the filter that was full of the contaminated oil! I went to the owner of the dealership and talked to him and they immediately put the truck on a lift and did a proper oil change and he gave me a written warranty for 20k miles in the event it caused a failure. I never went back to this dealer for any reason.... Over filling an engine is harder on the engine than having one starving for oil in my opinion.

In fact many performance drivers put in an extra quart due to how slow oil can get back to the pan, the forces pushing oil back or front or left to right and so on.
I have run an extra quart of oil in two of my cars. That was a tip from some high performance drivers.

I'm coming at this having worked on and built hundreds of engines over the decades.
Starvation is killer, really fast. Overfilling is only bad if it's to the point of foaming the oil, etc. causing loss of oil pressure, aeration of the oil.. Yes, that's bad.
The good thing in all of this is that with a lower viscosity oil like used in these, the air actually comes out of the oil quickly compared to heavier weight oils that hold the air captive through the engine.
Overfilling by multiple quarts is bad - but doesn't compare to 1 quart.

I'm at 50,789 miles and mine sounds alot worse than that. Already ordered the parts. I just didn't order them from Mopar. All parts are coming from Melling & made in the USA.

Sounds like injector tick to me.

The noise on the passenger side is normal I think. The drivers side is louder and heavier though.

I have run an extra quart of oil in two of my cars. That was a tip from some high performance drivers.

We ran 16 quarts in our race car (dry sump w/ tank). Replaced every 2-3 races (short races). In a game of fractions, the minimal oil we ran would mean the less the crank would be dragged through the oil, robbing fractions of horsepower. When we moved to the GM crate engine, I think it was 5 quarts. So much easier.

Every so often we'd see cars that would smoke oil coming off the corner. It was always the same racers. Amazing how they would never learn.

We never had an oil-related engine problems all the years we had a dry sump. We only made it about 11 races in with a crate engine that's designed to go 20 races with simple maintenance before it blew up. Amazingly, I know that a crate engine that was cracked open and balanced lasted longer than any factory-sealed crate engine.

Speaking of overfilling... a car salesman I know told us about an Expedition they got in and performed an oil change. Somehow the hood fell down and broke the oil pump nozzle. Ended up filling the engine with oil and spilling it all over. After draining it and doing in proper, they parked it out back and let it run for an hour while it burned and smoked off the excess. Geniuses.

Passenger side noise is mostly just injectors clicking, though it sounds like there may be some valve train noise lurking underneath. The driver's side is valve train noise.

Sounds pretty normal to me. Recordings make it sound worse sometimes but nothing really jumping out ? Overhead cams and injectors are not that super quiet.
