Do you not ever have to drive through the "country" to get from one city or town to the next? That's where there's no 3g/4g. In any valley between two mountains. 3g and 4g are functionally les reliable. The range is far too short. I'm not anti 5g. It's great at home. Almost as fast as wifi. But 4g and 5g suck in between towns. Only 3g works.
Can't say I have ever seen 3g show up on my phone. It either has signal or doesn't. Never seen a 3g crutch show up.

Damn cell service just continues to degrade it seems unless you never leave the city.
I did a trip last summer from fl thru tx, nm, co, ut, and back home. All on backroads, forest service roads, etc. (ran the rimrocker trail, and played in moab for several days) I had no actual Verizon cell service for an appreciably longer amount of time than with service. It was to say the least disappointing. I do carry a PLB but seriously, unless you are in larger city, you are in essence screwed...

This thread cracks me up a bit. Simultaneously bashing “millennials on their 5G phones sipping Starbucks” while being afraid of losing internet coverage in the boonies. Oh whatever did we do before internet on 14kft peaks!?! I guess I wouldn’t know, being a millennial and all.

Darn right. I'm a millennial and I want my 5g phone to work for the whole trip to Starbucks. ;)

It was announced. Lol a lifespan? What tinfoil hat looney tune expected their cellphone to last a life span? Seriously?

It’s called evolution. Oh no!! Faster cellphone service! Go back to 3G, Verizon, they’re watching me!

Another reason? Uh yeah. Better cellphone service and faster speeds, pretty simple.

we installed approximately 19000 solar systems with 3G monitoring before inverters starting coming with 4G equipment.
this impacts a lot of stuff

Upgrade the modem. I know it does, but this is what happens as technology advances, old technology dies. I feel like 90% of this thread owns a CRT TV and yells at kids in their yards. Nothing lasts forever.

This has been coming for many years. I remember when AT&T first started sending me emails about it. For those who say it’s a money grab, it’s not. The hardware infrastructure to move onto new technology is limited in terms of space and capability and expensive to transition. Short term, they’re probably losing money but that’s cap-ex. Their money is going to come in the long term with anything after 5g. Some costs may be offset a little by users purchasing newer devices but that’s a side effect upgrading infrastructure, not their main objective.

Who knew 1 sentence could cause all the animosity. I can’t even get reliable T-mobile/Sprint or AT&T service at my house but apparently I live in a big city with lots of towers. Who knew.

I just wanted my Gladiator to start and get me to work and beyond. I live in WV and can vouch that outside the cities (notice the lack of big as an adjective), cellular service is like playing craps.

AT&T has never been known to give anyone anything. I been with them a long time. You pay one way or the other. My phone gets 4g and when I am in a 5G area it will show 5G but my house is supposed to be covered by 5G and my phone does not show that. Neither does my wifes' iPhone 13 Pro. All it ever shows is LTE. I could see mine possibly not since its iPhone XS Max but her's has updated everything. There is a tower right down the road and our neighborhood has one of those area coverage camouflage towers right at the entrance. I still get one bar on my phone. I get one bar on my phone standing in the driveway sometimes 2 bars. Same with my wife's phone. I don't think any of them are worth the money paid. My mother in law has T-Mobile and she just new Iphone and she also doesn't get 5G in an area that is supposed to be covered by 5G.
Well, I'm sitting here looking at a Galaxy S-9 that AT&T sent to replace my wife's Blackberry...
No, it's not am S-21 or 22, but what do you really expect???
As far as you not getting more than 1 bar on your phone, you can actually be too close to the tower and be under the canopy...

Smoke signals, then cb radios…….back in the 70’s you never saw a Jeep without a long whip antenna

Lol who knew my Starbucks joke would still be circulating. I just found it funny how many people knew everything about where I lived because I openly questioned the use of 3G still. I’ve lived in Colorado for my entire 36 years, I know the lack of cell service very well in the mountains and other areas. Nothing like how rural areas can have it but the idea I live in a studio apartment in downtown Denver over looking 5G cell towers and never leave the city was laughable.

The only thing that I'm really frustrated about personally is the fact that occasionally I like to detox from smartphones, and I have couple of cheap dumbphones that are all 3G.
I don't know if you have apple stuff. But the cellular Apple Watch is a great way to detox.

I know its counterintuitive but when I leave the phone at home and spend a day with just the watch all I can do is call and with some difficulty text. That's really it. And if I use it too much the battery dies. So I'm always thinking of that when I use it.

It's really great. My wife got it for me because I never take my phone with me when I go for runs or long bike rides and she worries.
