One way is to use it as a recovery point. Jerk at it as hard as you can that guy is really stuck good. Get a good long run at it. Do this until it rips out from under your truck. YouTube will have plenty of reference videos.
And then get it replaced under warranty

First of all, to answer the OP's question, NO, I would not remove the hitch receiver to go four wheeling. You gain a fraction in departure angle, but you lose a solid steel contact point, and instead have a plastic contact point that is going to be easily damaged. You want the hitch receiver there to prevent you from damaging something that is more vulnerable.

Second, thanks AEsco48 for posting that link for the hitch skid. That is a good idea, and I just ordered one.

Take a close look at the receiver and your spare tire. The receiver was designed to give that some protection.

My receiver dragged here but there was not a single scuff mark on my spare.

Several mentions of the hitch rattling while driving - if the receiver is rattling then you need to tighten the mounting bolts. If it's a hitch that is mounted to the receiver then certainly you can remove it while wheeling! And they make gadgets to tighten up that joint to prevent rattling.

I bought this one on Amazon... Heres the link. $115

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CWBGCHB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I chose this one because I preferred the step to the "O" recovery point to the one someone else posted above.... Even though if you click on my link and in the pictures it says this one has a recovery point??? I dont know where but I'll use my red bumper hooks.

Looks like from the pictures its hard to tell, but its just all black with silver on the step part.

I'm not a fan of dragging the tongue and the receiver has saved me some hassle in the past but I have very mixed feelings about that hitch skid, to me it looks like an opportunity to get hung up in an ugly way.

I'm picturing it getting it all catywompus with a root, lord knows might even bend up the frame.

Okay enough joking, but seriously, I get the idea but it just looks like a plow to me.

Receiver. I'm not that dumb. :)
How does one take off the factory mounted receiver?
I haven't looked, but I'm going to guess bolts.
It's 8 bolts and the bumper comes with it. Great way to gain departure, great way to have a really bad time if you drag your ass.

If you want to get rid of it, go with the SOS or JCR bumper that mounts to the actual frame and removes the hitch. Nearly everything else still uses the factory hitch (whether that be proper tow or bumper tow) to mount the bumper.

I was confused at first. The thread asks about removing the “hitch”. I was thinking of the receiver unit under the bumper when you said the hitch. The part I’m seeing pictures of dragging, to me, would be the draw bar.
I wouldn’t remove the receiver hitch because, as stated already, it makes a great skid plate for the bumper. Last couple times wheeling, I would come off a ledge real slow setting the receiver down on the ledge and then creep forward using it as a rear rock slider. Worked great!! Bumper got no scratches on it in the process.
Removing the draw bar on the other hand, to me, is a no brainer. Having the draw bar stick out however many inches past the bumper is killing the already low departure angle. As evident is @uplandgunner’s pic the bumper and receiver never touched but that draw bar dug a nice trench for planting season. Lol
I only install the draw bar for towing. Any other time it’s under or behind the back seat.

I agree with not having the hitch on while towing.

However, it’s not a great idea to have that thing under the seat unless it’s strapped in like the jack... if you were to get in a wreck and roll, it will come out from under the seat, and if it hits you or your passenger, the outcome will not be good. I’ve seen too many unsecured items in MVC’s do a lot of harm to passengers... sorry to be a downer, just a lot of people don’t think about it.

Unless he has lockable under seat storage, as many do.
