So I swing into the shop today and the owner is like dude!! There ain’t shit for room In this thing ! I was like I know that’s why your doing it and I’m not!
So he drilled the frame and mounted the filter near the transmission skid. Made a bracket for the cooler to sit below the bottom of the radiator. He got all the hoses run and wires pulled but ran out of time to finish the wiring for the t stat and relay. He’s coming in tomorrow to finish it up and said he will have about 4.5 hrs into the install. It was flowing oil while I was there so that’s good!! Just need the fans hooked up and be good to go!!

I will get pictures when I bring her home!

When I do get a chance to tow I will take some snap shots of temps and weight tickets from the cat scale. I might make a trip next week to get the weights at the local cat scale. At that point I’ll have a good feel of how the cooler is working. I want to do some dry runs towing the camper around anyway as our first trip scheduled is over 800 miles one way. The guy that’s doing the install said he is making damn sure I’m not going to be mother fucking him on the side of the highway. Long as nothing is leaking we should be good to go!!

@Glad_he_ate what size trailer are you pulling? I have a Lance 1685 that is 21' tip to end and 5500 gvw. Thinking it should pull ok. My JTRD will be here in a couple weeks. Have a Ram 1500 as my main TV.

I was pulling a gray wolf 26djse and it pulled fine. Oil was on the hot side at 245 most the time. I never had any derate issues or anything. That trailer fully loaded was at 5500 lbs give or take. And was 8 feet wide and 31 feet butts to nuts. The system I had installed is more so a preventative measure. I’m now pulling a nobo 19.3 dry weight of 4200 and per an email from the manufacturer that includes the propane tank with no battery. They certify the weight with the propane tank full from the manufacturer. The only dealer added weight is the battery.
I’m hoping with less surface area and weight on the trailer along with the added cooling system I can bring towing oil temps down to 225. Time will tell. I just got her home and am going out to take some pictures of the install this morning.

So here are some photos of the install! Filter is by the transfer case cooler is laying flat under the radiator. He made a bracket for the back of the cooler and used the rad mount for the front of the cooler. T stat on the feed side of the cooler on at 185 off at 165. Keyed on relay to feed the t stat. System fused at 7.5 amps. Hooking trailer up in a few to take her for a spin.

One more shot of the cooler mounting location also did a test tow this morning. Not exactly hot out but had some wicked headwind and some good hills

Similar to what I will pull. Think we are around 4000 dry. Looks like your set up is working! No joke on space, hardly room for the hoses let alone everything else.

What sustained speeds are we hitting here?

I might look at bypassing the t stat with a toggle. I think if I run the fan basically any time I’m towing I should be able to keep the return oil down substantially and give myself more headspace. With the oil at 213 on the dash the fans don’t even kick in. It was not till about 220 that I hear them spin. I’m guessing the oil is cooled down to the 185 on set point by the time it runs through the filter assembly and the cooler. Basically what I think is needed due to the lower volume of oil in the bypass system is either a lower set point t stat or a override switch to spin the fans any time I see the temperature climb. This first bata test today tells me it’s working and no leaks detected!! Now giving a few data points I can fine tune things as I feel necessary! I tell ya tho keep that filter assembly away from heat sensitive items. It transfers a lot of heat being aluminum! So far I’m really happy with the setup.

If I can get the return oil down to say 120* at 10%volume I would think I should see towing oil temps around 200 to 220 in hot temperatures. Obviously I don’t want to suck too much heat from the oil and send cold oil back into the sump but if I can keep it above 100 and under 130 I think that’s a safe return temperature.

I don’t think this is cooling enough oil to make a difference without a pump and all that?
Wouldn’t have been easier to add fans to the stock cooler or add a second cooler to the factory oil cooler loop?
