Usually, in the mornings I will let my jeep idle until the coolant temp gets up to or past 90F. This morning i started it by remote start since it was a little colder (at least for CA) and wanted to let it warm up while i was getting ready to leave. When i walked outside i noticed that the idle sounded weird. Almost like it was fluctuating and reving up/down. I got in and pressed the start button to get it out of the remote start mode, and it was still fluctuating. I reved the engine a little to see if it would settle, and as the RPMs went up, there was a clatter/grinding noise. It sounded like the same noise when the fuel pump went out and my jeep stalled. However, once the jeep was warmed and driving, the noise never occured again.

Back in June of this year when i was up in Washington, it dropped into the low 30s and my jeep was still warming up and got the same noise and actually started to loose power when in moition. But this time had a code popup which was P053C I drove back to the house and parked and let it sit until the next day and didn't have an issue.

Has anyone had any issues with cold starts? Or heard any chattering or noise when giving it gas while it was warming up?

Fingers crossed no issues like that.

Have you checked all of your fluids?

It only happens when it has been sitting and it is either cold out or not fully warmed up.

All fluids are good. And just did a fuel filter and oil replacement about 1k miles ago.

Since I don't have one, I have to ask.

Does the 3.0 have an indicator for water in fuel or separator is full?

Do you have a block heater? If not, I would see about adding one. I would plug my Duramax in for at least four hours whenever it got around 40 degrees or colder.

I also added 2-stroke oil (0.5 Oz per gallon) to the tank when filling up to lubricate the fuel system.

No i don't have a block heater. It gets down to the low-mid 30s in the winter time, but never freezes. I would think that a modern diesel would be able to handle cold (not freezing) temps relatively OK.

I use HotShots EDT on every fill up. Especially after having the fuel pump replaced twice already.

That code is related to the PVC system. ECM detected high pressure heater circuit. Checks for pinch or loose hose. Sticky valve maybe

I haven't checked the PCV yet, but will. When it in was in the dealer for a similar noise, they could not recreate the scenario where the noise would appear.

When you replace the fuel filter does the procedure require priming the system?

Yes, priming is required to help speed up the long starts that follow replacing the fuel filter. usually the long starts only last one or two startups after replacing and regardless i always let the fuel pump "whine" up first before actually starting the engine.

I am hoping that was kind of a fluke for you. With the weird weather we have been getting out west the weather change could contribute to it.

Started it up this morning and as I was getting ready to walk out I heard it stuttering and then it died. Started it up and was idling weird again and got video of the noise this time. and now I have a check engine with a couple codes which are new.

Dropped it off at the dealer and they won't be able to look at it until next week, but now that there is a code popping up, hopefully they are able to fix it once and for all. This has been on and off since the first fuel pump replacement before the recall pump was installed.
