I took my truck in for oil change, tire rotation, recall and all that stuff. I drop it off at the local Jeep dealership (not the one I purchased from). I get a call back for pricing to put on sensors on new rims and tires (almost $350, i declined) but they then told me that the drain plug was damaged and they couldn’t get the plug off. They then proceeded to tell me how much it would be to fix it and only option was a new oil pan. I told them that I wouldn’t pay for it, especially since they are the only ones that have ever done the one and only oil change it’s ever had. They balked and said they would call me back. On the call back they said they would take care of it. WTF is this a common issue or what? Should I be concerned with anything?

Your dealer is a scumbag ran by scumbags with scumbag techs.

It's common.

If the dealer has all of the records of oil changes since day one, there should be no question who is responsible for the oil plug damage.

Allow them the time to make that hard decision to replace the pan (on them). It will be assigned to a qualified technician to do the job. Once the part has been replaced, bid farewell to their "quicky-lube" team and consider another shop to do the maintenance.

Install a Fumoto drain valve (either yourself or ask whomever does Your next oil change). Then just change the oil yourself next time without any tools. I have them on every vehicle we own except for the Porsche and have never had an issue in over 20+ years.

Thanks for this. I've seen a couple of these solutions that looked more like valves, and I was iffy on them leaking or not (I'm sure they're fine), but this one seems to be the best of the bunch.

FWIW, the Fumoto drain valves do not leak

I bought one and was going to install it at my first oil change. The fiber washer came apart under what felt like minimal force to me, so I put the OE plug back in and called it a sound decision.
I'd feel much better about them if they used a crush washer instead of the fiber.

Why anyone would take a $50,000 plus vehicle to a dealership and let the guy they hired last week to wash cars change the oil in it baffles me.
Same here, I also skipped all the free oil changes, but i'd understand some would like to use it caused they paid for it. Just bad luck sometimes.

Its easier to fight a warranty situation in your favor that way.

I would also suggest looking over it very close when you get it back just based on their initial response. One of the reasons I quit being a master tech at Ford was because I knew other ā€˜techs’ who seemed to be proud that they screwed up a vehicle some way and just would say ā€˜oh well itll come back and i will make more money’. Almost as if it was intentional. Not long after that I left for good.

2nd Fumoto. I wouldn’t use any other brand.
