Well, your DMV must have a sense of humor...ours, not so much.

No, it is not. There are several threads discussing it in the Engine section. You can do it to a new truck, and get away with it until the first required smog check, or physical interaction (inspection) with the DMV. After that, the truck cannot be registered or legally driven in the state.

They won't kick you out or hassle you if it is legally registered in another state. Under normal conditions, they would have no reason to check the vehicle or determine if it was legal under CA law.

Register it in SD. You only have to live in the state for like 2 days a year to maintain residency and we don't do vehicle inspections.

With that engine you could hit the really rough trails and just get your speed up, hit the first bump and fly over the rest.

Its not the engine part that's illegal, right, its the modifying of the original emissions control?

State and Federal anti-tampering laws specifically prohibit any modification to the vehicle's original emission control system configuration as certified by the manufacturer (California Vehicle Code section 27156 and Title 16, Section 3362.1 of the California Code of Regulations)

There's more to it than that.

General rule in CA is that it has to be replaced by an engine of the same original size or by a CARB exempt one. I installed a carb exempt “E-Rod” LS3 in my 1977 Trans Am and have passed the initial ref and ongoing smog checks 3 times now.

For some dumb reason they limit it to being installed in cars older than 1995, but super happy I replaced the 175hp original engine with the 430HP LS3. It’s fantastic.

Tampering with smog devices is a federal thing. If your state is not testing that does not make it legal. But what ever, California is going to save the world,,, LOL.

Absolutely and the plates are reasonable I own a couple places in the black hills register all my trailers ,boats , anything I don't run a dealer plate on. Wyoming has no smog or anything also.

As a further incentive for the SD residency to register your cars, we don't have a state income tax either.

I just googled, residency in South Dakota requires spending one night in South Dakota and getting a driver's license. Your address can be a PO Box.
