Doors off question

I leave both sets of bolts out and keep the interior hinge stowed. Much faster. I did purchase a Dewalt electric screwdriver, and that makes quick work of the bolts if they are left in.

Doors still securd when on though?

Pardon the silly question, but I'm waiting for Gobi orders to open before I actually own a Gladiator. Are these "bolts" somehow different than the JKs? First off, on the JK they are nuts, since the threaded shaft is part of the door hinge itself. Second, I removed them back in 2007 when I purchased my Jeep and they have never been on since. This isn't practical on the Gladiator?

No more nuts. Somewhere along the line in the production of the JKs they changed the door hinge design. There is a bolt that threads in to the posts of the doors that insert into the door hinges. Once you remove that bolt whose head is a torx head there really isn't any need to put that bolt back in except for security purposes such as you are running your Jeep with the top off and you are afraid someone is going to steal your doors while you are hanging out at the local Cantina.

I don't understand why anyone puts the bolts back in their doors. to remove the door, a person would need to open it first, locking your doors solves this problem. I guess if your roof is off, a person could crawl in the jeep, unlock the doors and lift right off, but a bolt or 2 will not prevent them from taking them. Certainly anyone going to that level could bring a torx tool with them.

If you have the door locked and roof on, yes. If not, theoretically someone could lift them off.

I would thank such a violent crash would bend the hinges before pulling the doors off. The chances of the force driving the exact angle that is required to pull the door out of its hinges sounds very low

I have never put the door nuts/bolts back on in a any of my Wranglers..

Since my front doors stay off more than on, I've done as others and just didn't put the bolts back in. Even with the top off, those doors aren't going anywhere unless opened. But I did find that it seemed like they didn't line up with the catch as well with the bolts out. So not sure if they help them line up a bit... Dunno.

As for taking the bolts off and on, You really can't beat a powered ratchet. I use this and it's been perfect:

For hanging doors, these are cheap and worked really well for me:

I keep the bolts off my JK doors. Partially because I was an idiot and stripped one of them when I tightened it too much. Those are the weakest bolts ever...

Question on that power ratchet because I've been debating getting one. Is it powerful enough to "break" the bolts when removing the top/doors or do you still have to manually do that and then use the power tool to get them the rest of the way out? And when putting top/doors back on, can you set the specific torque to put them in to spec? Thanks!

I have a JT Overland. Got it back in the beginning of June. Took the bolts out of the doors and took the doors off about two weeks later. I haven't had the bolts in since. If you shut and lock the doors, no one can lift them. That means safe and secure. I used to use my side cordless drill, but didn't want to overtorque the bolts. Now I just use a $15 pencil type cordless drill. Works great! But honestly, the ratchet that comes with the tool kit works just as well.

I have the hard bed cover, so when I have the doors off, I just throw everything that I need to in the bed or just don't bring it. Other than that, if they see it, well...........

In most states, I do believe you have to have at least two mirrors. I know that is the case in FL and SC.

Can't specify the torque, but I do exactly what you're talking about. Use it manually to break it loose, or tighten it down. And just use the power for the middle part. When putting the bolts in, I hand thread a few just to make sure I don't cross thread with the tool. But it's a HUGE time saver. And maybe I'm just clumsy, but with the tool Jeep gave us, I kept banging the head against the paint. So with this, not an issue.

And I have 4 questions about taking the doors off.

1) Primarly in Lousiana (also some Texas & Arkansas)
Are there any laws regarding going down public roads with the doors off.


2) Is there anything better for taking to door bolts off, than the wrench that comes with it?? ( I was thinking about getting a cheap electrical impact from Harbor Freight for this job)


3) Is there any type of security for when the doors are off, and you go to Wal-Mart & run into get something to Stop or catch some A-hole, from damaging the inside?


4) What is the preffered brand / product for hanging them on a wall??

What Dealership and manual transmission? % less than msrp?
