Well for the first time since I took delivery of my Gladiator (ordered 5/19, delivered 7/19), with the original factory batteries, today I got the dreaded Auto Start/Stop Unavailable, Service...(the system).

So, having said all that, I know some or most of you, have done the AS/S battery delete with appropriate Tazer AS/S delete.

So, how difficult is this to do? Should I get the stealership to do it or can I get my local (favorite) mechanic to do it? Yeah, it's probably getting close to time to replace the main battery anyways, but now it looks like I need to do the AS/S delete as well.

Interestingly, I have never used it as it's the first button pushed after starting up (the second one is the butt toaster, as I love my heated seat and how it makes my lower back feel much better :CWL: :CWL: :CWL: ) so I really can't understand how it went wonky but, here we are.

So, again, how difficult is it to delete this horrible option? Better to have the stealership do it or my mechanic?

Don’t believe any dealership will alter the way it came from factory Saying that watch any of the numerous you tubes on eliminating the battery by pulling a fuse and pulling the negative battery cable then you can decide to go with something like a tazer or a simple stop-start eliminator

I can't help with the aux battery delete since I've never had to do it, but damn.... you got me beat on battery life! I just sold my early '21 ordered JT with almost 100k miles and the original batteries still going strong.

When buying my new Gladiator, I joked with my salesman that I knew I was going to have to replace them soon, and I would rather buy a new JTR than replace that auxiliary battery, lol.

A tazer or start-stop eliminator will just mimic what he's doing now, just saving him from actually pushing the button every time. It doesn't switch the auxiliary battery out of the circuit.

ESS is always active. It cannot be removed or disabled. All you can do is prevent it from turning the engine off when ESS calls for it (which you have been doing by pressing the dash button).

All the dealer will do is offer to replace the batteries for you.

If you don't want to replace the Aux Battery, disconnect the Aux Negative cable from the Main Battery negative post and tape it up, and pull the F42 fuse.

What testing have you done to confirm the issue? People blast right past that all the time because of the "hurr durr ESS bad" rhetoric that gums up every thread, but the truth is it many times it's the main battery that has aged out and needs replacing.

I guess all I'm saying is don't cut yourself short and assume an ESS battery bypass will solve all your issues.

It looks to me that the OP already intends to replace his 7yr old main battery, and is looking to do the aux delete at that time instead of replacing that battery as well.

There are also other reasons for getting the 'service ... system' message that are completely unrelated to the condition of the batteries.

I got the exact same message on the dash as the OP when the hood switch went bad.

So, also check the hood switch that is in the stop/start system. One is for hood ajar and one is for stop/start. They are the same part number switch.

Switch resistance should be 500 ohms with hood open and 1000 ohms with hood closed. My bad stop/start switch measured 900/1400 and had become contaminated by water. I swapped it with the hood ajar switch and the stop/start light immediately turned off. I then ordered a replacement switch.

I'm stunned that you have the original batteries and want to "try" something different. You definitely got your moneys worth from the originals.

Tape up the aux negative and pull f42 like Mr. Bill suggested. Might be a good time to replace the main or have it load tested.

Read up on IBS, fuse array, charging AGM bateries and the precautions of replacing the batteries. Not doing this could make you very familiar with all of the above.

FYI note last year around this time I had the battery issue. Replaced both, the ESS battery made it around 6 months the the light came on. I left it as is.

So, my question is that if I do the AS/S battery delete as suggested here, by taping up the Aux negative (disco'd from the Aux battery) and removing fuse 42, will that also turn off the 'A!' symbol showing up on my dash right above the fuel gauge?

If this is so, then it's just a matter of replacing the original main battery. It is almost 7 years old now so...

Not necessarily. It will remove the aux battery from the list of reasons that symbol appears, but there are many other reasons it could appear.

As someone else said, this does not "disable" the system. All it does is remove the aux battery from it. The system is still there, still functioning, and still evaluating all the other conditions it needs to run.

So, then what's the pulling of fuse #42 got to do with it?
