Driveshaft, I definitely got the shaft.

Well yet another major problem. I heard something clinking around under the gladiator and this is what I find. 11477 miles twice off road on real trails. I definitely had plans to replace it, I guess now’s the time. The fronts been done from the beginning due to the 4” EVO lift kit. The arch was to far out so I replaced it with Reel drivelines out in Pomona. I’ve used them before never had any issues.

Holy crap. That’s the stock one? What’s the carrier bearing joint look like?

Was it impacted? Do you have a carrier bearing spacer? There’s a picture of mine somewhere when I had no carrier bearing spacer and 4.5” lift in the rear. I added the spacer pretty soon, but wheeled it hard before and didn’t have anything fail. Holy cow.

Wow. This was my original shaft before the spacer. It was a pretty severe pinion angle, but never failed. I’ve since fixed the pinion angle with adjustable control arms and replaced the drive shaft, but that’s got to have been an impact, or just a catastrophic failure from a defective shaft.

I don’t envy that project. It was hard enough getting an only mildly damaged one out. I highly recommend hand tools, no matter how much it sucks. Those bolts are a bit soft.

Lucky my buddy Sam owns Pomona Gear and Reel Drivelines is right down the street. Between the two of them they’ll have it back up and going in no time. I’ll definitely post up some after pictures.

The way the shaft was worn, and the bolt heads look, it was over-angled.

I think the only thing that would work now is cutting them off at this point. Or hit them with an air chisel.

here is the one from my old jkur front drive shaft. it got so hot it blued the metal. luckily it didn’t catch fire, if that’s possible. i just replaced the cv joint and was good to go again. that front drive shaft definitely had more angle than your rear. probably did stock also. it was making a terrible popping sound under load in 4x4. torque spec wasn’t very high on that part. i cant remember the spec though

The blueing you are seeing is from the heat treatment / hardening of the part during manufacturing.
