Build.... The two most accessorized vehicles in the country and maybe the world are HD Motorcycles followed by Jeeps. Designed parts save time.

Building is the art of putting parts together in such a way to achieve desired level of performance not available in current form. Replacing parts to keep something running is not a build, that is maintenance.
Many time these parts need some level of massaging to work correctly, the simple buy and bolt in on comes with some level of thought/understanding to either make it work correctly or to get all the right parts to achieve the performance desired.

Great case in point, the Question, "can I run 40 inch tires on my Stock Rig?." Yep you can buy and bolt on, performance achieved? Not likely. Still need suspension, gearing, axle upgrades, brakes, shocks etc. All of which can be bolt on and will the end result be great? depends on the parts selected.

Then you have shops that take a pile of DOM and build a race truck, they still use bolt on parts, does that disqualify them as a build?

Then there is Johnny Shadetree that brings a the proverbial $2K SB to the party welded with coat hanger wire.... Still a build yes?

I'm sure if I lived in the SE I'd have a long list. For some reason it seems all the really stupid shit comes from there.
LOL. Agree with this, Especially Florida.

I admit, I did do the duck thing early on. Think it was more of a new to the unique community thing for me. But ditched them long time ago. Although not a mod, definitely kind of stupid.

Why?
They actually make sense.
Pushing the throttle 2/3 down to get 1/4 response is crazy. Drive one of my cars for a while then go back to the jeep lame throttle.
I prefer instant throttle response.
I like to spend money on things that can’t be replicated by applying more right foot lol.

leveling kits...
I disagree
What constitutes something being a "build" then? Do I need to forge the steel myself?

I must agree. I don't understand it. Why take out the rake thats meant to minimize squat when you use the truck as a truck? The rake is minimal anyways, and most of the time when a truck is "leveled" I think it looks like it's squatting in the rear, especially if its a Rubi or Mojave because the rear fenders are lower.

Not a "mod", but I think ducks are dumb. I get that it makes people excited and feel like they are part of something, but it's gone too far. One or two ducks, ok, but anyone with 30 ducks across their dash should be ticketed because it creates a hazard and distraction.

Angry grilles. Nuff said.

Excessively wide wheels, too large of diameter wheels, rubber band tires, and excessive lift kits.

Anything chrome. I hate chrome. Blinding bullshit.

Excessive exterior lighting. There is zero reason to have 6+ lights across the windshield, 3 on each cowl mount, 4+ across the bumper, 4 on each side of the bed rack, and 4 more across the back. You're not providing any more usable light than if you only had a couple strategically placed.

20 different dash accessory mounts. I get a phone mount (two if your passenger wants one), and I get maybe having one for a hand mic or maybe a SMALL tablet if you need it for OnX/Gaia etc., but you don't need one for every single piece of electronics you own. You don't need constant access to ALL of them...

i disagree about the leveling kit. I have a Sport S and thought it looked dumb leaning forward. I have no intention of lifting my Jeep as I use it to haul my travel trailer and don't want to compromise the towing ability. I installed air bags in the back to prevent squat in my rig when hauling or towing. Maybe it's just my OCD but I prefer the rig level. That being said, the joy of the jeep is we own our rigs and can put whatever hideous stuff we want on them. If everyone in the world put angry grills on their jeep, we couldn't stop them. Que sera sera

The over-usage of the term "build" to describe what people have bolted on to their "rig".
Agreed. To add to it. When people call simple accessories "mods". Like floormats, window visors, stubby antenna's, stickers, seat covers and so on. None of those are "mods".

Don't you know, it's ridiculous to simply buy a Gladiator and use it....like a midsize truck. It must have thousands of dollars tossed into the suspension and sit on tires you don't need, all in the name of driving a Jeep.

So I'm more curious than anything on what others think and wanted to bring up a discussion on this topic in the event maybe there are those out there who are like me.

I'll probably catch flack from some people who fall into this category. But oh well, flame me. I don't care. Maybe I'm biased for the sake of being adamant about my build being simple, sleek and tastefully done (which I get many compliments on specifically). I agree that Jeeps are arguably one of the most customizable vehicle platforms out there.

With that said, I feel like we as jeepers often do mods just for the sake of doing them without really considering; 1- Is it practical? Secondly, is it really needed or worth it. I totally get to each their own. That's the good thing about customizing, is that it brings out your personality among other aspects. But also I feel like that's why there's so many tacky looking and even overly built Jeeps out there too. Again maybe I'm biased in having practical quality mods that actually look nice without taking too much away from the stock sleekness of the vehicle but also serve a purpose.

And I'm not even really speaking on the sense of personal preference more than I am of practicality.

Examples: (solely my opinion)

- Clearlidz or anything of the equivalent... like really what is the purpose? So you don't want the open air feel, but you really need to see out the top when it's raining etc? Ooook. 👍🏼.

- Fender flare extensions. So we get aftermarket wheels with negative offset to poke outside the fenders...yet add flares to even it back out. (Then although slightly true, use the excuse that law enforcement in some states prohibit poke). Again although true, as a cop myself I can tell you 90% don't give a crap even in states that prohibit it. I guess if you're in area with nothing else to do, maybe but not quite in my neck of the woods anyway.

- Half doors; never never understood them personally. Tube doors I get, but half doors although they don't necessarily look bad to me, are kind of pointless unless you have it like that to just spend money. So I want a door on, but not the top half? Yeah. Ook.

What are some of the silliest mods out there in your opinion?
How about this, does it count as a dumb mod? Please don't be mean I am very proud of this "build"!

Defiantly not haha. Sticker/decals are super easy to remove. Including OEM decals. Heat gun then denatured alcohol.

Maybe more accessories/gear than a mod, and I'm not saying any of them are dumb on their own, but I don't understand people that daily their vehicle in a city/town and keep them kitted out like they're going on a 3 week excursion (roof top tent, rotopax, hi-lift Jack, traction boards, axes, shovels, propane, etc.). I get it if you go often or for large items if you're limited in storage space, but I'm guessing for a lot of people it's more decoration than anything else.

It looks good on Facebook & Instagram when those folks gotta post about how cool and adventurous they are.

Kidding (kind of). I had an RTT and rack once before, hated having it on the truck all the time and didn't have anywhere to keep it but in the middle of the yard. Got rid of all of it. Tent camp now when I feel like going out. All that fits in a closet.
