Engine Failure

Tough Day, my ecoDeisel failed yesterday. 2022 JT with 14,031 miles. My years of engine related experience leads me to timing chain failure, which usually results in lots of internal damage. It’s at Anderson CJDR in Lake Havasu City waiting for “assessment”. And I’m waiting for the call.
I had a 2015 Ram 1500 with ED, and put 74k miles without a hiccup. Not so lucky here.

Maybe it's the fuel pump. How did it die?

Unfortunate. I had one in the Ram 1500 and you couldn't pay me to have another one. From what I can gather, they are either great or horrible, depending on your luck. I've seen insides of them with not a lot of miles, and they are absolutely choked to death with carbon. With every oil passage completed cemented shut. Others have said the fuel pump gear is a clearance fit, and it can slip and destroy things. I've heard it said too that they are incredible engines, untill you choke them to death with emissions, and if you can delete it all, you can make them last. On mine, thankfully I didn't risk the warranty and it was the right decision. Hopefully you have all your maintance records, like oil changes mostly, available and ready because they will ask you for it. I got mine used, and of course I don't know it's past, and mine came apart before the very first service was even due so there wasn't a maintenance question. My dealer I used for the warranty was actully very good about it and seemed to have done a very good job replacing the engine. Don't go watch it happen, they take the body off to do it. It's a horrible sight but actually the best and easiest way.

I know that's its one of those deals where the majority of people with EcoDiesels have them and they're perfectly fine and don't have any issues, so the owners don't post any complaints, but I swear every post I see about them makes them seem like utter Fiat garbage.

It died with a good amount of knocking and clunking. I can’t imagine that the noise I heard was a fuel starving issue. But, I say that without any experience with high pressure pump failure.

Curious about any symptoms leading up to it?
Were you towing?
What was your oil change schedule like?
Any modifications? Lift / Tires / etc?

Getting a bit more insight into what happened would be nice!

No symptoms. Not towing. Accelerating gradually to 55 mph. Just a sudden loss of power accompanied by noise and dead peddle. I put it in neutral and coasted to a stop on a busy Highway 95.
Pretty scary for me and wife as cars, trucks, and tow vehicles braked and swerved to avoid a stopped Jeep.

Oh Yeah. Also Oil lice at 65%, not due for another 2k miles. No mods, no lift, stock tires.

Almost 24,000 miles in one year. Mine has been great.

Kind of sounds like what happened to me on NYE. Leaving the store and was accelerating out of the parking lot and then all of the sudden it started to clunk and make noise like possible drivetrain issues. I was at about 24K miles when it happened and it was less than 8 months old.

Ended up that the fuel pump grenaded and had to have the entire fuel system replaced. Took about 50 days from tow to pick up from dealer after replacement.

Ok, latest from Dealer is: truck threw a code for high pressure fuel pump. So, from the vast experience of the members, what kind of noise do you hear when a fuel pump impeller comes apart?
I’ve never heard a diesel make noise from fuel shut down…that’s how a diesel is shut down!
I guess I’ll know when they install a new fuel pump, start it up and it either locks up, or it runs fine.

Yeah I’m betting this was a Fuel Pump failure.

They don’t really come apart, they shred themselves and eventually cause an immediate failure like you described.

Questions,

Do you use a diesel fuel additive? If so how much are you using, and which one?

If it was the fuel pump, the repair is a chore, and will likely take at least a month…

They replace the fuel pump, fuel rails, injectors, filter…. Then they flush the tank and lines…

If they try to just replace the pump call Jeep immediately.
