for people coming from the truck world, I can see where you want a little more. me...coming from the wrangler world...towing with my 2011 was super painful. driving Gladiator with Max Tow feels like a race car.. I guess its all relative. it shocks me when I step on the gas and fly up the mountain!

Every time I buy a new Jeep, I think I've finally bought the perfect one to build and keep forever. A proper V8 offering would be the next one to change my mind and make me start over again.

I am with you on this, a more efficient engine over a “big” V8.

I left a V8 and i guess i did it at the right time because this little V6 feels pretty peppy at lower speeds (and on bigger tires) granted its 14 years newer. It's all about perspective.

2006 Tundra Limited - 271 hp and 313 lb/ft of torque @ ~5000lbs

2020 Gladiator Rubicon - 285 hp and 256 lb/ft of torque @ ~5000lbs

I think I will eventually swap a 5.7 or 6.4 hemi in mine, once warranty is up. Also, as far as I know, no companies have figured out how to do a manual transmission with the V8, everybody is swapping autos with JL/JT.

That being said, the 3.6 is returning better and better fuel mileage for me as it breaks in (just 2000 miles so far). And with the manual transmission, the fun factor is there for me. There is an argument to be made about the benefits of driving a slow car fast! Like a Miata that you can drive at 10/10s on the street and not break the speed limit within 2 seconds, lol.

I didn't buy my Rubicon to go fast, I bought it to go everywhere and haul all my stuff reliably, daily! And it's doing that phenomenally well. If I want to go fast, I'll hop on my motorcycle or throw insurance on my E39 M5.

However, if they do offer a V8 with a manual, I'll 100% trade mine in. But I'm not holding my breath!!! Just like the diesel, or 2.0 turbo, it will be autos only, just the sad way the market is going. If I could have gotten a full size v8 truck with a manual I probably would have gone that route, but it doesnt exist. I'd rather drive a slow manual than an auto V8, just my personal preference.

Ya know size wise if they were to retool the old 318 it would fit perfectly. Those are physically tiny compared to the current hemis.

Ford just brought back a pushrod v8 with the new 7.3l. a 318 or 360 modernized in a gladiator would be an item id scramble to buy.

I found a few more sources talking about the new I6. Sounds like they have the plan to build it on the same assembly line as the 2.0 4cyl, sounds like nominally a 3.0 liter size. Supposedly a target of 3”? longer than the 4cyl (which sounds impossible but could be for the entire assembly including accessories?). Also sounds like this is for 2023 with the all new wagoneer and grand Cherokee maybe getting the 5.7 in the meantime.

It’s mostly speculation but interesting none the less. I haven’t read a thing about it but I’d assume 2023 would be getting close to a mid cycle refresh like the 2011/2012 JK with the new dash then pentastar, so it seems logical that if they were to introduce the I6 to JL/JT it would be then. Guess we will see

I remember my 1st brand new vehicle a 1983 Jeep CJ-7 Renegade in Copper head. It had a 258cid straight six cylinder (4.2) for those young folk. 112 HP . But it weighed 3200# 5 speed and good torque down low. Had it 12 years a daily driver never wanted more power.

Looks a lot like my first Jeep...which was a 1983 CJ7 Renegade...what part of Texas are you at? I bought mine in Magnolia and punch myself periodically for ever selling it but I was a dumb high school kid

I recently drove a new Dodge Durango rental 250 miles for work. It has the same 3.6 Pentastar engine. I got 27 MPG. The problem with the Wranglers and Gladiators is not the engine. It's the weight and shape of the vehicles.

I had a 2004 durango which I couldn't replace with a new one due to the fact they went from a towing cap of 8700 lbs, to 5k lbs. I couldn't understand why they whimped them out so bad. I got the Gladiator, and I love the weight and shape of the jeeps, very classic & durable. Personally I would much rather have the range to go explore than the power to drain my tank quickly, but once again thats just me. I thought the specs on the new Ford Explorer Engine were pretty impressive, considering the size and weight for the engine, didn't think much of the truck tho. Extended stays in the wild are what I'm after, not pulling heavy equipment.

The February 2020 issue of Four Wheeler magazine has a snippet in the "Is It True?" section that insinuates that there is confirmation that FCA is working on a V8 for the Jeep Gladiator.

There is no other information. It's simply a passing veiled remark. "And a Jeep Gladiator V8 for sure now?"

If this happens, after all that former engineers on Jeep solid axle vehicles have stated, I will be in shock. I will also be standing in line to place my order while I'm in total shock.

V-6 MPG is bad enough without adding 2 more lungs. Whats wrong with 285HP? I don't know, hell, the american way I guess.

I don’t think a V-8 is in the Glad’s future....

But Jeep is developing a turbo straight six that will produce anywhere from 360 to 525 HP!
