Front axle disconnect. There’s a sleeve that slides into place to engage or disengage the axle shafts.
Ahhh. Thank you! I was racking my brain lol

Any time. It wasn’t that long ago that I didn’t know what it was. This forum is great for rapid leaning.

The Rubicon front locker I got was due to 40" tires and snapping front axle at the FAD. :like:
@Blade1668, the shaft snapped or the tube? Any pics? Haven't heard of that specific failure yet.

@Blade1668, and others…I gotta ask your opinion: would the tube have snapped at the FAD on 40s if it was trussed?
In the case of the one I got a truss wouldn't have helped, it was a JLUR with close to that size of tires. The P.O. hit a ditch or something with some speed or something on that line. After it was fixed it was traded in on different brand of vehicle according to his wife. All I wanted was the locker. :like:

I still don't understand why manufacturers abandoned the tried-and-true and far superior manual locking hubs. Is it because customers are too stupid or lazy to be bothered to get out and lock the hubs before hitting the dirt? Everything has to have a stupid push-button or automatic operation, despite all the compromises that come along with it?

I’d say unlikely. The gladiator front axle is stronger than on JLs. And I personally don’t think the fad is the weak point others do. Granted I’m on 37’s, but I push it, and I’m not trussed. I’d just put two piece RCV’s in and let it ride.

It's because the strong independent women who drive 99.5% of all Wranglers and Gladiators will not get out and lock hubs in a snowstorm to get to soccer practice.

Same reason many models have full time cases available.

Maybe you should take them to soccer practice?

The FAD dates back to before many members were born, at least 1980. Yes, in Jeeps.
You can't always predict, nor get out on I80 in traffic to lock hubs.

Whoever takes them to practice, doesn't change what the consumer wants.

Which is why transmissions, hubs, cases are automatic, doors are 4, tops are hard, fuel is injected, springs are coils, terrains are all...

I think locking hubs are great, but with a valid alternative, I’d rather have a fad. Not a pneumatic one from a yj, but these with a beefier skid are fine in my opinion. For a dedicated trail rig, sure locking hubs would be great. But not for these housings where the seals are.

Much of that is just plain better. Auto transmissions are safer off road, even if you’re very good at a manual. And I drove them exclusively for many years. Four doors is way nicer for having people join you, or more storage for trips. Fuel injection? Everyone loves a simple carb, but not at a severe angle. Much safer to know your truck will stay running when bad things could happen if it doesn’t. Coils allow more articulation. The tire thing doesn’t matter. Choose what’s best for your use case.
