Oh yeah, absolutely. I'm so used to driving my old car that I leave way more space than most when driving even my jeep. And the first thing I did when I started driving the classic car was upgrade all of the brakes and the seatbelts.
I changed my Javelin to front disks. New seat belts in the Eagle, had custom made using original hardware and new webbing by a company that does such things meeting specs.
I had the wheels restored, checked for cracks and flaws, at a cost of 200/wheel.
The Javelin I sold I redid the brakes, it already had front disks, but I sent the calipers out to have them modernized with stainless steel sleeves and lifetime warranty on calipers and pads.
You can't unsee some of the stuff i've seen having worked in that shop that did towing for the state and city. And with the accidents I've been in personally, I've come to appreciate what innovation and technology has done.
ABS wasn't a government regulation, no one forced it, there was no law, no "officials" even suggested it, there was no mandate. It came strictly from the car companies copying aircraft technology. ABS existed before many forum members were born.

And my point about classics vs. stripping a new vehicle was totally missed.
You are ultra careful - or should be - when driving something that absolutely cannot be replaced, you drive LESS, fewer miles, so the risk is lower in that way. I don't purposely disable safety equipment on anything.
Check the stats - number of classic or collector car accidents vs. new vehicle accident numbers.
We are a lower risk in our old cars. Lower numbers as well. We actually restore our seatbelts with newer, modern webbing, new bolts, latches get restored, steering gets updated or upgraded, and more. Some even install new glass with urethane instead of butyl.
A Model A or T can't go as fast as even your CJ7, and is very light. the chances of killing someone ELSE while driving a Model A is pretty damned slim. A coke bottle will hold up the axle of a Model T while you change the wheel. Top speed is probably 1/2 to 1/3 that of a Gladiator.
A Model A is just over a ton - about 2200 pounds. An Eagle is about 3200-3300. Your truck is more than double that of a Model A and goes a whole lot faster. The Eagle speedometer tops out at 80. It's about 3/4 ton lighter than a Gladiator.
2.5 tons of truck going down the road at 70 is a lot more deadly than 1 or 1.5 tons going down the road at less.
I also leave a whole heck of a lot more space between me and the fool ahead of me when I drive my other cars. If someone squeezes in, I fall back again.

We're you assuming that I would be suggesting anything differently for those who would buy a basic stripped down jeep? The question is 'why can't we buy that because I'm telling you there's a market for it, there's a group of people who want that' why are we relegated to buying this sort of simplicity to buying something 70 years old? If a manufacturer could offer said group what they want I'm betting a lot more would come out of the woodwork and buy than they think, the cost of manufacture should be minor and make it very attractive.

You and I have had this argument before. You seem to think people are no longer able to look after themselves in a machine and need Tesla level automation to protect themselves and others....out one side your mouth...then right out the other side you suggest the opposite. So you agree that people will be safer in lower tech more hands on engaged machine that demands your attention to the task at hand...at least with the older simple vehicles but any new vehicle can't be like that so must have every techno nanny available...do you see the flaw and hypocrisy of your arguments here? Do you just like to argue or something? ;)

I have suggested to many times how this world could be a lot safer on the roads by getting back to the basics and removing all the things that babysit, all those false senses of security. But this takes thread hijacking to a whole new level.

You basically just argued that you and your AMC's should never be allowed on the road again and are the pinnacle of human irresponsibility and then the next post justified the opposite saying what I've always said...safety comes first and foremost from the nut behind the wheel and when you're piloting 400 lbs on 2 wheels up to 2.5 tons of road missile you should be 100 engaged, alert and treating it with the seriousness it really is and fully understanding whatever level of machine it is you're driving. I could not agree more. We have agreed before half the people shouldn't be on the road and drivers licenses seem to come in cereal boxes these days...well tech and conveniences are a big part of the blame for this and people thinking that driving is a right and they have zero understanding or care of the responsibility they should have every time they get behind the wheel. So don't be painting yourself, or those of us, who wish to drive far simpler if not primitive machines, you already admitted we will be safer than the next...there's reasons for that. You should be more about this as more like us on the road the better. Less who want to play with themselves on way to work in Tesla's the better for all of us.

Now, back to the thread...for all those who don't understand why the op would ask these questions...move along, take your negative Nelly self to some thread where you can add. Please find some comfort that it's ok for people to not want exactly what you want out of a vehicle lol. Jeep people come from every walk of life, some just dragging their knuckles apparently all the way up to the smarter than everyone else suits, find your lane. I know it's hard to believe but in jeep world you're gonna run into people who want machines as stripped and basic as possible and there's no need to fear they wouldn't know how to operate it for what it is...they are the last people you need to worry about on the road as they know EXACTLY what it is they want and EXACTLY what they will be driving. 15 pages of mostly hacking on a guy's idea because you can't understand his want? This still America right? be better

Yep. When I had my CJ, and i upgraded any safety item I could, I still wouldn’t let anyone drive it. You can’t drive something like that and expect it to be as forgiving as a vehicle even 20 years old.

are there some 70 year old 4 door solid front axle manual trucks out there one can buy new? not really, last trucks I drove with simplicity and manuals were regular cabs and one extended cab but still only 2 doors, sure miss those trucks

so first 4 door solid front axle truck with a manual comes along in decades, if not ever, and you wanna pizz in the cornflakes of those who aren't down with all this modern tech nanny crap and connectivity and air keys etc.? that don't even suit the vehicle at all? sounds like many of you should be in grand cherokee or ram 1500's if you need a box but how naive to think the mechanical simple lovers wouldn't be all over this truck and wishing for less of the tech and finding solutions to get rid of half the crap that comes with today's vehicles

some of you can sure skirt the points being made here, 'why would you want that?' 'I don't get it?'....clearly....move on or help out

negative ghost rider, reading comprehension is not even across the board I guess, we say the exact same thing about this particular subject, safety is 100% down to the nut behind the wheel, we just say it a little differently is all and maybe don't quite understand it the same...but we are saying the same thing lol

many of us won't lend out any vehicle due to liability, never mind if it's a harder or easier vehicle to drive, doesn't matter the level of knowledge, experience, or skills required to operate said vehicles, 70 year old vehicle or 2 years old, or motorbike, or manual, or whatever, doesn't matter, irrelevant to the discussion, it's up to the operator to know what he's about to pilot and pilot it accordingly and up to the owner or one liable to ensure any loan out is into qualified hands

shadow has a really interesting way of saying this lol, in one breath him and his AMC's should be outlawed from the road and his license taken away for such irresponsibility and in the next breath it's ok...as long as you know what you're driving and drive it accordingly...like y'all suggesting a guy wanting to buy a stripped down solid axle manual jeep truck wouldn't somehow be the same?....see what I mean about getting off in the weeds, argue just to argue

push button start has no place on the bottom trim levels of solid axle manual jeeps, those buyers want less tech, less nannies, fca oversights, so rather than meme those guys to death, hack on their threads, say stupid things like 'I cannot for the life of me see a reason why you'd want that' etc. just stop, move on, don't come to these threads...negative Nelly somewhere else, if mods wanna get in the game here...there's a great many pages of this thread that could go bye bye, most of my posts too as I'm just playing who can be a bigger a-hole with the a-holes to shed a little light on said a-holes, maybe then the actual good ideas and helpful suggestions could be more condensed and the possible solutions keep working their way to the table for the op and anyone else interested in the same thing, like me...just a thought

I want to see you drive some of the trails I do with your hypothetical 70 year old truck. What goes into the designs of these far exceeds your imagination. Good luck towing in wind at 80mph safely with your manual no computer truck. You’re obtuse, at best, but more likely you’re just an angry moron.

I could rip the pentastar out of my rig, go full mechanical 4bt and absolutely kick the current set ups arse towing. Who tries to fight wind at 80 mph in rolling bricks? you just keep missing the point, making assumptions, that people that want certain things don't know exactly for what they wish, how the heck did we ever get by in those 6bt manuals back in the day lol...anyhow, deflect, assume, and stay off in the weeds discussing whatever it is you wanna be wrong about next lol

No one has a problem with the OP’s desire, or yours. Not do we have an issue with you disagreeing with others. The problem comes when you start calling people sheep because we don’t agree with you. Then your credibility, as someone with a particular viewpoint, goes right out the window.

What's interesting is the amount of money some of us spend on older vehicles making them safer...........
and then this.
4 to 5 grand for a front suspension and steering upgrade, or more.

You couldn't be more wrong. The roads are far safer than they have ever been with all this nanny tech. Including you. Things like dynamic stability control, antilock brakes, airbags, dynamic braking, etc, etc. I was a fatal collision investigator for a number of years and it is so much different than it used to be. I get that you feel like you want a simple vehicle and that there are plenty of people out there that would buy one. I don't believe that is true. The number is probably much smaller than you think. Jeep won't even make a 2 door Gladiator because they won't sell enough and I am sure they would sell more of them then some stripped down basic model. All of this is moot because federal highway safety laws would not allow what you want to be sold as a new vehicle today even if we all wanted one.

I for one understand the original thought here. To get rid of the need for the radio signal to start the Jeep. My understanding is to simplify the Jeep and somehow make it more reliable. The OP was asking for someone to essentially do this for him as it didn't seem like he had done any research into the system. Yes there were some negative folks in there but most just realistically explained that it is a deeply integrated system and would be cost prohibitive and extremely technically difficult to do. That knowledge doesn't make anyone a sheep, it makes them a realist. I built the TJ in my profile Pic from a stripped frame. You know what? It had a computer, and sensors and airbags. Was it more simple than my JT? Of course, was it as simple as my 77 CJ? Heck no. But as a trained high speed pursuit driver I am far safer as well as the people around me when I am driving my JT.

You know who the most dangerous person on the road is? The one who thinks they are better than everyone else.

My father would be alive if there were more "nannies".
A beautiful girl with a bright future wouldn't be living her life (from age 16 to 60, about how old she is now) in a skilled nursing facility if vehicles were more like the JT back in the 70s. She was the daughter of my boss back then, driver fell asleep and there was nothing to alert him to the pending doom, he hit her head-on.
You think you have it under control, and most people do most of the time, but it takes once, that's it, just once, and life for someone is over.
It's not just the person in that other vehicle, it's the whole family. My brothers barely speak to each other now after Dad was killed - one forgave the kid, the other says the kid needs to spend time in jail (he didn't, the fine was a couple hundred bucks for killing a man)
There's no law against being stupid or irresponsible. You can be pulled over for drinking and driving but there's no law against sleeping and driving or being stupid and driving.
