Hey Guys,

Am I reading Jeeps payload numbers incorrectly? It appears that manual transmissions on most of the lower trim models have a much higher payload of 1,700 pounds vs about 1,200 pounds for the automatic. The funny part is that the towing capacity is just the opposite with the automatic towing a lot more than the manual.

Please straighten me out. :)

That's how it is. Every option added increases weight and reduces payload capacity. The manual transmission used does not have the pulling capacity that the automatic does. The Max Tow Package for the Sport model gives you the highest combination of payload and towing capacity available, but payload is affected if you add all the extra options that can be ordered on the other trim packages.

I was thinking along this line as well when I ordered my Willys Sport with MT. Unfortunately my payload is just under 1000lbs :( The only options I added were the hardtop and tow package which probably adds 50-75lbs over a soft top/no tow package. Granted the Willys does come with the steel rock rails...

Needless to say I was a little bummed since I was expecting at least 1200-1300 payload.

All the numbers floating around in either the build site or the owners manual are really fictional when it comes to payload.

When you go to pick up your JT, before you sign ANYTHING, open the driver side front door. There is a sticker on the front of the B pillar that has your TRUE payload. If that is not enough for your needs, tell them no deal, it doesn't match what they told you when you ordered.

The number on that sticker is the limit set by the manufacturer for your trim level with your options and packages. It won't appear anywhere else but on that sticker OR registered to your VIN on Jeep's Owner page. The thing there is, I don't know WHEN that info appears online, I didn't order mine, got it off the lot. So when I registered on that site the dealer already had had possession of my JT.

My Sport S Max Tow will all the option packages plus hardtop side steps bedliner, etc still had around 1400 pounds of payload. Not bad considered I completely loaded it.
