Key fob battery is dead?
That's what it sounds like. It doesn't like being unlocked with a method other than how it was locked, and needing to press the fob against the start button? Dead fob battery........ likely.

I'll say this, fob battery dead in 2.5 years with minimal uses is weird. I've had fobs last 5-7 years!

And the truck freaking out when you use the key sure throws you in to a wth mode in the middle of a parking lot trying to figure out wth his going on with the horn running non-stop.

I pulled the fuse the horn to shut it the hell up then was able to figure out what to do to get the truck going.

I used the fob just the day before to remote start the truck form 50+ yards away and it worked fine.

I'll swap over to my spare fob and get the batteries replaced.

I keep batt’s in the glove box. Their life span is hit or miss.

My wife drove a Lexus luxury SUV for a couple of years. The fob would go dead super fast. The dealership service manager explained to her that the many different signals that emitted from her iPhone was the cause of the batteries dying so quickly. She bought a faraday Pouch, and sure enough the battery lasted for the rest of the time she had the damn thing.

Pressing the fob against the start button is a feature to enable you to start your Jeep even if your fob battery is dead. It sounds like it is acting exactly like it should. Just replace the fob battery.
Funny enough, I had this happen to me with a Turo rental Wrangler on vacation. Turns out the previous renter must have gotten the fob wet. Until the owner came out and gave me their spare, I had to unlock with the key (setting off the alarm) and start the engine by pressing the fob against the start button. Things I learned on that trip - don’t drop my Gladiator fob in the ocean!

To be honest, I came here looking for some kind of mall crawler thread. I was kind of hoping for some story about getting stuck on top of a snow embankment, along with a borage of comments about a front locker. Maybe some pics too, but nope, just another keyfob. ;-(

These things happen. Don’t over think it.

Glad you got it figured out.

This happened to me once too and the Jeep was only a couple of months old. Walked out to leave work and was chatting with a coworker. I had remote started and it was running as I approached. I think I hit the fob (or I may have just grabbed the handle)and unlocked the Jeep, opened the door and was standing there talking with my coworker when the alarm started blasting. Nothing I did would silence the alarm. At some point the alarm shut off. i didn’t think to try the fob against the start button.
I started monitoring the battery voltage thinking maybe the battery was low on juice but as we all know it swings wildly and it didn’t make a lot of sense to me. Anyway, it hasn’t happened again and Iā€˜m hoping it doesn’t , damn that horn is loud! no idea what happened to set it off.
