Carvana is known for working the system and using loopholes and such. And known for people fighting to get a title a month after delivery.
No way in hell I'd buy from them without a title in my hand at delivery and a vehicle that shows under 25 miles on the odo.
Anything else - sorry, take it back.
Doesn't take much to find all of the people who have constant hassles with 'em.
They offered me something like 38,000 for my trade vehicle to buy it outright. I got 44,000 from the dealer - and under MSRP on the new. Every time I check with them, its a lowball offer that others easily beat. They've had legal issues, were on the verge of bankruptcy, etc.
Totally figures .

Believe it or not, he enjoys it. He started with the company when there were a tiny, individually owned outfit with a very small lot and only a couple of garage doors.
He's getting old enough now, though, why bother switching.

I guess - if I liked what I was doing, was good at it, and it paid the bills - I'd be happy, too.
But man, that's a tough game to be in -
I remember when I drove into a dealership lot a few years ago, there were 4 sales people like ants crawling to fresh sugar coming up at me. Like the zombie apocalypse or something!
Scary.
I finally said - I'm just here to buy some parts.

There is no way in #%@#$ I'd ever take that job. I'd clean out grease pits at McDonalds first.
When I go for dealer parts runs, I purposefully sit in the car for 10 minutes reading the news or this forum, or making a phone call. The sales people just can’t stand it. They just want to come up to your window so badly. They’re just freaking out.

Then I get out walk straight to the parts entrance and their hearts just sink.

Done similar. Parked in front of sales usually because service lot is full and watch the sales staff start poking heads up like prairie dog with the usual sales guy standing by the door waiting to pounce as soon as I get out. Giving the wave off and pointing to service with a smile and watching their faces sour like they just figured out Santa Clause is not real gives a certain satisfaction.

Not trying to be mean. I don’t go with that plan in mind. But when they lurch forward before I even touch my door handle, it irritates me that I can’t even walk towards the door without being swarmed. So I take a few to let them calm down. :). When we buy cars, I do all the research in advance, call around, get price negotiated via phone, and usually provide a refundable deposit before ever showing up. That way I can show up and just say, I’ve got an appointment with “whoever”.

The dealer I usually go to get parts from has the parts entrance right next to the new car entrance. So it happens almost every time.

I wish I'd have thought to take pictures of the time I drove my 70 Javelin to the local Chevy dealership.
I pulled up right outside of the new car windows as I wasn't sure where the parts department was at that time.
I saw people walking from inside, from all over the lot, toward that car.................
I had called them and asked about tires for it as they advertised decent tire prices. They said they could get anything I wanted, stop by and chat.
Not knowing where to find the people I had talked to, it made sense to park outside of the main entrance.

I have no idea what they were hoping or thinking................... but no way was I trading that for anything! (I did end up selling it to help finance my first JT, though - man, I miss that car more than most I've had.

It ended up that the part department was like half a block down in that LOONG building. Got a great deal on tires.

$45K back in '22, unfortunately. That was with an affiliate discount. Market woes.

As for Carvana vs. local dealership,

I have no experience with Carvana so I can't speak to it.

My local dealership experience - thankfully my local Jeep dealer was awesome for both my Jeeps. The first time I went in looking for a Willys 2DR JK in Hydro Blue and they had one. I said give me that. There was no upselling, no haggling price, etc. I think I bought that one at a slight discount (your typical regional incentives type arrangement) and that was that. They asked if I wanted an extended warranty, I said no, they said sounds great and did the deal.

At the end my paperwork had no hidden fees, no garbage in it, etc. It had taxes and a very modest paperwork fee.

My second experience in 2022 was the same. I went in with a print out from the online builder and asked the guy to order the truck I spec'd, and I told him that I was paying 1% below invoice price and showed him my FCA control number. I sat with him for a half hour, he spec'd the truck in the system, I reviewed it, and he ordered. The end.

Two months later I arrived to pick it up. the finance guy offered me a warranty, I declined, he said sounds good. I financed it through my credit union, and at the end was the same result. No dumb fees or packages or charges and the final price was within a few dollars a month of what I calculated independently.

Now, I have had two poor experiences with the local Supreme Family of dealers (the Chevrolet AND Toyota one), both trying to charge me for goofy ass expenses (like window etching on a used car when the windows had already been etched since new, so double dipping on that garbage), haggling back and forth on warranties, add ons, and purposely convoluting the numbers to make them hard to understand.

As far as I'm concerned, you could do away with car salesman and I wouldn't shed a tear. Give me a check box online to order from with a clear itemized break down of costs, and tell me where the service center is. In person, put a kiosk in the middle of the room with a fella to explain how it works if needed. Get rid of the snakes.

$38K. Freedom addition max tow with 4K miles on it. Dealer loaner.
I don't deal with sales people, I deal with the owner, I've bought my last seven vehicles from him...

More than likely they do not even submit the title and tag paperwork until after the 7 day window. That allows them to still resell your turn in as "new".
Oh, you are 100% correct, it even shows you this in the carvana dashboard.

No car has a title in hand until it's paid off. what r you talking about?

Mine had 15 miles on it at delivery

I do agree, they do lowball the trade-ins, but then so do *most* dealerships. But they also gave me 5k in customer discount because I've bought more than one car from them, on top of the 11k off jeep discounts.

So for me the customer 5k discount plus the trade-in value ended up being about my private party kbb value was. It came out even for me.

I can tell you right now, Carvana is selling cars like hotcakes right now. Especially the new jeeps and my experience and my son-in-law's experience has been fantastic.
