• New vehicle cost $50K
• Trade in vehicle is $30K
• You only pay tax on $20K for the new vehicle and not the full $50K

That is why if you decide to private party sell your vehicle and not use it as a trade in, you have to make sure the over and above from wholesale trade in cost and private party sell cost will cover the full tax amount of any new vehicle purchase or you are losing money not using it as a trade in.

I bought my 2020 sport S w towing and limited slip & hardtop w 5000 miles last year for $33k plus tax etc.

with couple years left on warranty.

I put 1,000-2,000 miles a year on my vehicles. My wife's 2021 has like 7,000 miles on it now. My Mom's 2014 has around 15,000. I'm more amazed when vehicles are only a few years old and hitting 100k.

Dude I put 2800 on my Jeep every month in just 20 days driving not counting weekend miles which is usually several hundred. If I only did a 1000 per year I would have to be 142 yrs.old to put the miles that I have already on mine holy moly.

I recently purchased two gladiators, one for the wife and myself.

2025 Willys MSRP was 52K, paid 38K out the door

2025 Sport MSRP was 42k, paid 32K out the door

On both gladiators i used the current incentives, the dealerships also heavily discounted the vehicles, AND I negotiated on top of it, got an additional $500 off the Willys and 1K on the Sport.

Also on the Sport I used loyalty incentive for 1,500 and golden tickets for both vehicles.

This post was made in 2019. It really needs to die. Someone start a new/more relevant one.

The market could not be any more different now. It’s also changed so much along the way. So any ups and downs. I thought that I timed the market right when I bought a fully loaded, $55k+ gladiator for $47K 2/2020 and that’s not even a good deal anymore. There weren’t any used ones period. Used are dirt cheap now and now there are way bigger discounts.

Not sure what the sales tax code is in all the states but in California, you do not pay sales tax on the trade in amount. That alone can influence wanting to trade in a vehicle instead of selling it.

I guess I got screwed.Ive always paid the full tax on a new vehicle with a trade in.This is in Ca.Pay 50000,trade in 20000.you pay tax on 50000 for the new Jeep.

I just looked up the current tax code and you are correct! Looks like CA no longer gives you a tax break for trade ins. Not sure when this changed.
