Ok, I'll admit it, your title made me laugh.
That was the whole purpose, other than hearing people bitch about another redundant question.

ESS is not there to save money on fuel. It's there for reducing emissions while stopped by reducing the time an engine runs idle.
I doubt it reduces emissions that much more if any though

On a per single vehicle unit, you are right but like the CAFE MPG, the EPA calculates it and the manufacturers receive credit for total emissions over the whole quantity of vehicles sold.

The manufacturers will do anything to get that bit of fuel mileage that they can. I'm surprised that the A/C compressor is still run off the engine, and not having it's own electric motor like the power steering pump.

They’re proven to save gas and they wouldn’t use them if they didn’t. They result in minimal additional wear and tear in components. Since the ECU update they did a while back, loss of the start battery should no longer prevent starting of the truck. However it’s true that the system adds complexity, more stuff to go wrong and additional maintenance costs to replace an additional battery.

My biggest gripe is that it’s inconsistent and dumb about when it works. I don’t know about the 3.6 but on the diesel it only works some of the time. I’m not sure what the criteria is for it to start working at stop lights but sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. Mine often avoids working all around town until I pull into the driveway and right before putting it into park, which is idiotic.

Along the same lines. Inevitably I will go into active regen while off roading at 5MPH or right when I get stuck in a traffic jam. I thought I could use a Scangauge II to “plan” an active regen, let’s say when I go on a trip and I’m about to pull off the highway onto FS land, if the DPF is “full” I can just drive around until the regen happens. That was wishful thinking on my part. This never works out this way because the truck does a good job of passively clearing out the DPF. Inevitably it’s when I’m off roading.

There's proof from independent research showing it DOES save fuel. My wife and I have both found the same. It works. Edmunds says their testing showed 7%-10% fuel savings - the savings obviously depend in the individual driver, the vehicle, but most of all, the driving conditions (city vs. rural, a lot of stops vs. a few and so on)
There have been other tests done by other entities that have proven it DOES save fuel.
Time to research instead of knee-jerk reactions like hate of what's not understood.

Sounds to me, since you mention "hesitation" that you drive as if on a quarter mile track looking for a 0.001 second reaction score.
I've never really felt it was "hesitating" but then I tend to be observant while driving and the engine is running by the time my light is green.

These systems have been around for many years, and have been used by multiple auto makers for as long.
I've never had any negative impact with any of our Jeeps that have this system other than battery issues - but that's not due to the ESS, it's more the batteries themselves, and the lack of tighter control over the aux battery charging methods.
I wonder if using your starter a couole thousand times more in the life of your Jeep has any affect? Also you think stopping and starting a diesel engine is good for it? Like to see thecresearch on that .......... mines deleted and my Jeep store thinks thats a great idea....
