My truck started throwing the swirl valve code last year. Runs fine, but can't pass NYS inspection with an emissions code.

I've had a manifold on order from the Mopar parts folks since January, and even got a dealer involved hunting for me a month ago. Everyone tells me there are none available.

Anyone know what's up?

Oops, just realized you’re an oil burner. Worth a try though. They have all kinds of take off stuff.

Not an ad, but I worked for Fenix Auto Parts in Palmyra for a while, they only take in vehicles less than 15 years old, and we had a JL wrangler come in my first day. They're also nation wide, so they probably can source you a manifold for your diesel pretty easily.

FYI, even used parts are going for damn near new retail, seeing as they know you can't get them anywhere else or at all.

Those "Swirl Valves" are the same thing Subaru used a decade ago on the EJ engines called TGVs (Tumble Generator Valves). They were common inspection issues in emission states, sometimes the motors would fail, sometimes the sensors.
- Sometimes you could take them apart, clean them, and they'd be good after a CEL reset. Other times you could take them apart and replace the sensor as only 1 of 4 would go bad, but they never say which went bad and you had to buy them as an entire unit if new.

I sent you a PM about correcting this.

Sorry to piggyback, but I am at 70k and on the weight loss. I would like to remove the intake at some point and give it a good walnut blast to undo the 70k miles of crud it ingested. I seem to recall there were some pro's to removing these swirl valves? Is there any truth to that? Wondering if MRTuning already accounts for that in the Stage2 tune. On the other side of the equation, is there any pro to retaining the swirl valves?
I searched the forums but got tired of reading all the misinformation relating to GAS engines, and nobody seems to read the diesel part.

There's a nationwide backorder. Some dealers have them in stock, but the warehouses are empty.

Supply chain and backordered parts are a major problem with all OEMs. There are filter shortages and there's about to be a possible oil shortage, too.

there is a thread that sez gen 2 intakes are the same to gen 3.
Gen 2 and Gen 3 are not the same. They have different part numbers and different components.

I think you might be thinking of the Banks intake. The Banks intake will fit both trucks, but it's for deleted applications.

No, the swirl valves are needed for the best performance and fuel efficiency.

Keep in mind, the Banks was designed for a high horsepower/high torque application. It was not designed for efficiency or fuel economy.

Here's what GDE said about the swirl valves:

“We do not alter swirl settings in tuning regardless of egr, air motion is critical for more even combustion. Google may not be my resource of choice for engineering information. The chamber needs high swirl at lower rpm, it helps disperse injector spray before the combustion starts. Otherwise, you get hot spots in chamber and areas of incomplete burning. During my time at Detroit Diesel we increased swirl with valve geometry, port shape and eyebrows on cylinder head as opposed to helical ports and swirl. Bigger engines have more room to play with stuff like that vs. these small diesels.” – Keith

Interesting info, and I guess that makes sense. I am curious now about the MRTuning/EOC stage 2 and if it is removed. I will email Martin and ask.
