I've lived too long with 37's and the 4.10 gears in my Rubicon.

Well... I picked up the Jeep today after many months trying to decide 4.88 or 5.13, I ended landing on the 4.88's figure my Jeep is pretty light and being here in Florida I think it will be fine. I do travel outstate and the 4:10's with 37's were really rough in the mountains. I know there were areas I'd drop into 4th on some of those elevation climbs. Think I will stay with 37's and the 4,88's may be best for my setup. Things I noticed on the first leg of the ride home was how responsive the throttle was, even babying it, you could easily tell it took less effort to get moving, another thing it would run up onto 7th or 8th gear pretty damn fast. The shop was 36miles from my house so the first leg was 16 miles, stopped at a gas station for the gears to cool, 45 min. Drove the second 16 miles to a walmart to pick up some items for the MRS. Gave plenty of time for the diffs to cool down, ran the last 2 miles and parked the Jeep for today. Never exceded 50 (mostly 35-45 on my route}The diff cover was cool enough to keep my hand on it 10 seconds before I took off again, I will more than likely preform 2 more heat/cool cycles. after 100 miles do 2-3 highway heat/cool cycles no faster than 65 mphh for 15 miles then cool back down and repeate x 2 . Does this sound like a good break in procedure? Going back at 500 miles for inspection and fluid change, Any tips for the new gears, Thanks in Advance,

I'll start by saying that the 4.10 with 37's have been quite liveable here in Central Florida for the past 2 years. However, leave Florida and the 4.10 really suck once you get into Tennessee, Virginia and especially Pennsylvania. So I have put all modifications on hold until the regear is done. I have the 3.6 8speed normally carry no more than 500 lbs gear on a trip. I have the stock steel bumpers, Badlands winch, Rockslide engineering sliders and a Clayton 2,5 overland lift plus a 3/4 spacer up front. Not sure if I should go with 4.88 or 5.13, may switch over to a 38 x 13.50 when the current ons go out. I've called only 1 shop in Orlando and they Quoted me $3400, Can any of you Florida Gladiator possibly share the shops you know of what name brand gears you went with price and overall happiness.
I’m not in Florida anymore, but Alens Gearworks in Palm Harbor is top notch. For brand, I’m super happy with Revolution. Between those two ratios, I’d do 5.13s if considering bigger than 37’s. I love mine.

You’ll love the regear. I used 4hi auto for my entire breakin to make sure the front was rotating. I don’t know a better way.

From others who have done the re-gear the front does not need that type of break in your large load is on the rear . A few dirt roads in 4hi stopping here and there is gonna take care of it .
Someone chime in on thos thats done it but I believe I'm right.

I would have gone with 4.88, like you did. Conventional wisdom here would have high RPMś in top gear, but that´s a lot of noise and a fuel economy killer in top gear which is supposed to be for quiet cruising. In your shoes, I would have only considered 5.13 if I frequently towed a very heavy trailer or if planning on 38´s down the road.

I went with 4.56 for 35´s with my JL Wrangler (manual) and it is almost perfect. If anything, a little higher rpm in 6th on the highway than the sweet spot, but 6th wasn´t usable with 4.10´s except on flat land or going down hills.

Just my 2 cents after living with 35´s and 4.56 gears in the JL, I think you hit it on the nail with 37´s and the auto with 4.88.

That is basically what the guy at the gear shop had told me.

I was considered moving to 38's and was on the fence with going with 5.13's. When thinking about it 37's have been able to do everything I need or have wanted to do. So I decided to stay with the 37's and go 4.88, I just finished my 3rd heat/cool cycle no faster than 45 mph in city stop and go traffic. I'm really happy how it goes through the gears vs the 4.10's. My average MPG is showing right at 19 which I never saw in city driving, then again I'm babying it pretty good. Didn't do the regear for added MPG's but if I get some, well that's just a bonus.

Revolution, who I discussed this with, agreed that it’s less of an issue, but definitely wanted as many miles on it as possible. The heat cycles are still important in the beginning.

Agreed. I made the decision to 5.13s over 4.88 because of towing. But having done it, I’d do it anyway. The crawl ratio is sweet. And I can still drive 85, which would be near impossible with 5.38s.
