You should be fine with 3.73s and 33” tires. I changed out the 255/75 (32.1”) tires that came on my new Willys with Rubi spec 285/70s (32.8”) KO2s and the performance is excellent even at our altitude. I corrected the Speedo for tire size and it hits the top two gears without hunting. This is my daily driver and will never get bigger tires, but from experience with my JK and 37s, if you’re going to go big on tires go deep on the gearing. With 35s on a JT ID GO 4.88s, giving me the space to go 37s when the inevitable urge hits.

Plenty of clearance and no plan to lift it or go to a bigger tire.
Then I’d say definitely no. It’ll be great the way it is.

Just bought a new to me 22 Gladiator Sport (3.73).
Went from the OEM tires to 33" BFGs and wondering if I should go to 4.30 or 4.56?
Even though it rides and drives OK, its a bit sluggish and shifts back n forth between 7th and 8th gear at regular highway speed (60mph).
Its a weekend back-roader and doubt it will see too much off-roading... Not too concerned with mpg because its not my daily driver but also don't want everything spinning unnecessarily fast if not needed.
Use manual to keep from 7 & 8 dancing around

I've got 34's on my Willys (3.73). It does hunt between 7th and 8th gear, but it did that to some extent with the factory 32's. It has plenty of power and I'm averaging around 18.5 mpg with the larger tires. You should be fine with 33's.

To bring this thread to somewhat of a conclusion... Today I put the Tazer Mini in and programmed it for the correct tire size.
Only had time to put roughly 10 miles on it but it seems to be "fixed".
Speedo is dead on and it shifts into, then holds 8th gear with no problem... No more hunting between 7th and 8th.

I'm not completely sure I'm gonna stay with the 3.73 (or the 33's) but will for the time being since the Jeep's drivability is back to normal.

Wanna thank all you folks for the input.
I'm a member of several boat, truck, utv forums and I know in a lot of those places you get some bad info and a lot of sillyness / foolishness.
Is refreshing to get straight answers and solid input... even though I'm fairly thick-skinned and enjoy the BS from time to time.

Thank you all.

With 33s I’d probably downsize to 3.45s but that’s just me ?‍♂

I prefer a little umphfff on the bottom end vs low cruising RPMs or decent MPG.
Also after pulling a tape on my 33 BFGs.. they're 32" tall so I'm guessing my actual gear ratio is 3.50 / 3.60ish

Pretty sure your actual ratio is 3.73. But it’s all good, sounds like you know exactly what you’re doing. ??
I’ll go back in the closet with my JLU on 35s with 3.45s and my JTOD with 37s and 3.73s ;)

Yes. My OEM ring n pinion is 3.73..
By actual ratio I was referring to how many rotations my driveshaft would need to make in order to spin the tire one full rotation with the taller BFG's

Went with 4.56 gears and changed the OEM LSD out for a Detroit Tru Trac locker.
Have only driven it from shop that did install to the house so I can't give a true review on how the 4.56s work with my set-up.... but will once I get some miles and seat-time on em.

I can say that getting into, and holding, 8th gear is no longer an issue. The tranny now runs right through the gears up to 8th and holds it there unless you get heavy on the throttle.

Will report back once I've programmed the Tazer for new gearing and have put some miles on it.
