Well, that looks like a fun wear part I’ll have to watch out for later… I guess the white plastic knob drops into something in the transmission rather than being bolted in?

I had the service transmission error on my JTR soon after I got it home from the dealer (400 miles). It happened intermittently on startup after sitting overnight in my side-sloped parking spot, so I suspected tranny oil level. One time the truck actually went into limp mode, but pulling over and restarting cleared it.

It went away on its own a few days later. I decided a dealer would never be able to replicate it and I never got around to checking the oil level.

You say it started happening after a recent software upgrade? I’ve had all manner of computer issues on mine. (I have to turn the update function off or the computer crashes when I shift into reverse if my phone is connected by CarPlay).

Can the dealer downgrade you to the previous version?
The whole control module is held in place by 4 10mm nuts, and the transfer case is attached to it by 4 10mm bolts.

Oh… I assume they made the whole thing out of un-reinforced injection molded plastic, to ensure maximum quality?
Oh for sure, and put it right over the area of less heat.

Wow.
Taking something as simple and (should be) bulletproof as a manual transmission and overcomplicating it with all those electronics is a betrayal to its history.

Throwing this out there…do you have a Tazer? I’m f so, and the dealer flashed your computer, it needed to be unmarried first. Then married after the flash with your set up. I had a transfer case replaced and while I did unmarry the Tazer, it threw all kinds of codes and service four wheel drive alerts until the Tazer was married up again. Thinking maybe it related to a Tazer or J-Scan etc?

Holy moly...this has been eye opening for me. I'm a proud owner of a 2022 with a ManTran but this is the first time I've seen the "module" that you took out. That's wild...and absolutely absurdly disappointing. I knew it was cable actuated, but I figured it was some kind of cable/mechanical connection. Not a damn wire.

I've got 15k on mine with zero issues. Got the letter recently for the transmission recall. I'll not be doing it. I've had no issues and my gladiator is 99.9% on road with minimal clutch slipping/action like it would see off road. But still..had I known this before I likely would have gone with the auto. Bummer.

So it depends. Did you unmarry and remove the Tazer before the dealer worked on it? This is best practice. And depending on what was done, there can be issues until you marry back up the Tazer. For example, if you’re-geared, it will think the old gears are still in and will throw things off., etc. causing codes etc.. Also, not sure if the dealer even flashed/updated? If not then it doesn’t really matter.

Yes they reflashed, and I'm regeared. No the tazer wasn't unmarried when that was done.

There has to be something I can do with the tazer that will solve the issue

Yes…I’m guessing this is your problem. It states very clearly in the Tazer instructions that you need to unmarry and remove before having work done at the dealership. I would talk to your dealership. I believe you will need to unmarry and remove, then hook up the wires back to factory. Have the dealership flash it again. hook up and marry your Tazer. Then put back In all your Tazer settings. Hopefully this will solve your issue. This is why dealerships don’t like Tazers. They may want to charge you for having to do it again since you left it installed? I’ve always been up front with mine and never had an an issue having a Tazer.

ADD: You may want to contact z-automotive and get their advice on the situation first…

Very helpful tip, I wish I would have been given all the information that comes with the tazer but wasn't. I had a company do it when I had them do alot of other work last August.

Well thats unfortunate. That said, you will need to get familiar with it fast. Install and uninstall is a little tricky, as well as programming. Sleep cycles are very important when programming. There are lots of of good YT tutorials…quadratec, northridge4x4, and Z-Automotive. Watch, rewatch, and utilize while programming.

ADD: uninstall requires putting the factory wires back to factory location. Just unmarry and remove is not enough.

The problem is, you didn’t unmarry and remove. As a result, the flash they did either didn’t take, or will disappear if/when you unmarry next. When you don’t unmarry the computer doesn’t permanently get the update. This will cause problems as you have encountered. The Tazer programs your factory computer, if it’s wrong, I don’t think the Tazer can’t fix it. Try contacting Z-Automotive and get their advice, but I’m guessing they will tell you the same thing.

While the Tazer is removed, perform a firmware update. Z-Automotive has a good video tutorial on how to do this as well.
