I was able to do this in my JLUR, and did it 3 times before installing the Z automotive extension cable. I want to use my Tazer in my new 2023 JTR, but I can't get those *!#! SGW cables to even wiggle. I've tried some of the tricks on the JL forum posts, like the screwdriver pushing on the tab. i've read all Rhinebeck's posts. I hesitate to do what is most often suggested, that is to hold the tab in and pull straight down on the wires. The last thing I want to do is pull one of those wires out of the connector. I swear they put mine in with loctite.

No, I don't have teenagers around with tiny hands. I can get a hand in there, but can't hold the tab in and pull anything at the same time.

Pro tips and for the many who have done this successfully, please let me know how you did it. I spent an hour and a half yesterday and two hours today with no success. Thanks.

EDIT: Found this thread. I will see if it works. Tazer JL - an easy way to get the stock connectors unplugged | Jeep Gladiator (JT) News, Forum, Community - JeepGladiatorForum.com

EDIT: @dos0711 came by in the rain and was able to get them out for me. Kudos and many thanks.

You could hunt down one of your neighbors and ask if one of their kids would be able to help you.

The alternative is to start dismantling the lower dash until you can get better access to the connector.

I feel your pain. I just got my extension cable today so I never have to do it again. I was able to depress the lock tab with my finger and wiggle it enough that it stayed unlocked but I ended up tugging/wiggling it by the wires to finish pulling it out. Both connectors were difficult and my one hand was cut up on the back when I was done.

I was cursing the "engineer" who designed this but then it occurred to me the dealer service department doesn't have to do what we do (I don't think) because they have tools that can get through the SGW via the OBD port whereas we have to bypass it. So then I began cursing the "engineer" who designed the SGW to block access through the OBD port when the problem to be solved was over-the-air hacking not hacking via the OBD port. Then I started thinking maybe it wasn't the engineers at all, it was the bean counters trying to make one more reason why we have to take it to the dealer for service and to increase the costs for non-dealer garages.

It was unfettered access to the vehicle through the OBD port that allowed the hacking to take place. That part of the story is usually left out. That is why we now have the SGW to deal with. The dealer tools are designed to work through it, everyone else has to work around it.

A person demonstrated the ability to slam the brakes on a Jeep ( ABS module) while it was driving down the road....over the air.

Love your SGW.

While it would have been easiest leave my Chrysler 12+8 bypass cable hooked up (because the OBD port at the other end would be there for next time I needed it), I thought it would be better to hook the SGW back up with the extension cable. The chance of getting hacked is probably close to nil but the protection is there so why not use it.

Kid "Hey dad, there was some perv in a black jeep riding around the hood asking kids to help him get something off, I got his license plate"
Dad "I'm calling the cops"

Nope, not happening. This is a spread out rural neighborhood, and the only neighbors I know don't have kids anymore. Thanks anyway.

I do love it, I just want to disconnect it so I can put my Z Automotive extension on it and use my Tazer or ECRI with jscan.

The chances of getting hacked are pretty much zero, but leaving the bypass cable attached makes it possible. I also installed the extension cable so that I have easy access, when I need it.

That's why you approach the adults, not the children, and ask them for their help. You may find one of them has smaller hands than you and is willing to try.

From the location of that plug, it is only natural to sort of start pulling the plug at the same time you push in the tab. Try squeezing the connector together while pushing in on the tab. Without releasing pressure on the tab, try pulling the connector. I didn't have any trouble, well I didn't skin my knuckles. It is a pain in the backside.
