Are they willing to unwind your deal?
I've asked for an answer today. I have an appointment Monday to put steps on the one I have and I don't want to do that if I don't keep it.

I am very curious as to how this turns out. Unless I missed something it looks like you have them over a barrel with the way their ticket is written about installing the max tow package. I haven't shopped new Gladiators but the things I've read on here about the available deals, I'd get out of that one and find exactly what you want.

Me too! I am looking now just in case and to see if I can even afford a different one.

Assuming they will let you out of the current Gladiator, the only thing that would keep me with your original dealer is if they make a serious effort to get you into a similarly equipped max tow for what you paid for the current one.

I’ve been reading through this thread for a couple of days now, but I don’t remember seeing when you told the dealer you wanted the max tow package. Was it something you and the dealer talked about before the sale and they offered to add it for you? Or did you decide you wanted it after signing the papers and they only added the receiver? If it was discussed first and then the deal was written up, your case is very strong. If you asked for it after the sale and they added the reciever and wrote it up as Max Tow Package, it isn’t so clear. Regardless of how it happened, I would have a very hard time doing any business with them unless they honestly try to make this right.

The sale was contingent on the max tow package. The sales person said they could do it. He knew I would be hauling horses.

Every time I called in the 30 days after the sale, and it was a lot, I said Max Tow. They could have said we can't do that at any point.

What gets me is how dangerous this could have been if I had not joined and mentioned this in my first post!! I'm very grateful to all of you.

That is what I thought just don't remember seeing it written out. Please let us know what happens.

It's so stock, but the lift made it better - and it drives better.

Side view.jpg
Keep in mind - lifts and larger tires reduce tow numbers. (or what it can safely tow)

So if you got a max tow and put on a 3" lift - it's not going to safely tow the factory numbers. It's always "appropriately equipped" or words to that effect and that means - if things are just right, from the factory.

The sales person said they could do it. He knew I would be hauling horses.
Sales people just plain don't know - there are rare ones, like the guy I use, who has out of his own pocket gone to Jeep training courses and knows all of this stuff..... but most? Naw. They don't really know much, especially about what makes a tow vehicle.
My tip for 90% of all car/truck buyers - don't go by what the sales person says when they say "sure, it can tow that" unless they show you your exact version in the book with factory equipment.

Added equipment also drops your payload. If you have a payload of 1500 pounds and put on power steps that weight 150 pounds, your new payload is now 1350 pounds.
The trailer's tongue weight - say that's 400 pounds, comes off that so now you have a payload remaining of 950 pounds for you and other stuff in the truck or ON the truck. Steel bumper - subtract that extra weight from your payload.

Anything you add to the truck or carry in or on it takes from the payload.
Trailer tongue weight counts against payload.
Lifts and larger tires reduce towing capabilities.

So if you plan on modifications, get the most tow rating and highest payload you can muster!

I've heard a salesman say before "sell what's on the lot" so if someone goes in looking for a Max Tow equipped JT, some eager young idiot of a salesman will say , "yeah, we can do that".

The way salesman have to run everything by the sales manager, someone somewhere in management knew this was wrong, yet went ahead with it anyway.

I'd be pushing for a return and 100% refund, then shop for a properly equipped JT.
I'd try very hard not to give this dealership anymore business, the service dept. was involved in the deception to some extent, they installed the hitch and I'm sure saw the incriminating paper work.

If you go back to page 2 of this thread, it seems like there are several models that will meet your towing capacity requirements, but are not “Max Tow.”

Might make it easier to find a replacement.

Just a thought.

While true - plan for the future. Maybe there will be an additional horse? Maybe a larger trailer?
And if the plans include modifications, then best to buy the highest ratings possible.
My Overland would do it fine - but by the time you add a bunch of weight, a lift, larger tires and so on, you are back to lower capacity.
Possibly $$ comes into play - and the costs of new Rubicon or Mojave would leave me way out of play - I'd be looking for Sport S max tow, cheaper, more capable towing.

This was a level lift - 2" - I was planning on wheels and tires - so if it stays at 4500, with just the engine cooling added... and my brother said something about a transmission cooling and making sure the tires are sufficient (he's going to send me more info I just don't know) ...how do I find out how much I would be able to tow?
