Oil pan rust

Anyone else have this level of rust occurring on their lower oil pan? I do live in the upper reaches of the rust belt (south central Ontario) where they use salt spray but I have not seen that level of rust happen on an oil pan before.

(Ignore the drain plug, just finished up an oil change).

I am likely getting this covered under the 3 year/60000km warranty. If not, it’s about $150 for a replacement pan.

Anyone else out there have this happening?

Only to the town compost and leaf waste site which is a 50kph road max for about 500m maybe once a year in the spring. Other than that no other gravel/dirt roads on my commute to work or driving around.

Do yourself a favour and take it to Krown after the rust is repaired.

Unless it is perforated rust, I would be surprised they would cover that under any warranty. All it takes is one little chip here and there before it just rust jacks under the finish over a season or two to get what you have.

That is a where you live problem and not a material defect one.

The first troubling issue I noticed when I climed under my ecodiesel was the poor quality of paint adhesion on the downward stamping portion of the oil pan . After only one season the sharp radius produced by the stamping process failed and the paint covered area started to rust inward towards the block.

IMO this part was produced in Italy with no regard to the harsh salt conditions in North America. My recommendation would be to replace the original pan with a modified verision; take the stock part and have it powdercoated locally before replacing.

That doesn't look unreasonable. The paint on those pans is not thick at all, a few chips from a rock or some scrapes combined with road treatment and there ya go. I'd wire brush it really good then treat it. Only way to (maybe) prevent this is to regularly spray out underneath and touch up paint chips every few months.

I’ve also got the paint bubbling and rusting around tow hooks in the rear and it is getting replaced under the bumper to bumper.

its funny about how I was recommended to get the truck Krownd afterwards, and it is already Krownd every spring (2 applications so far). The shop that applies it will not spray it on flat surfaces because it just washes off. It’s about $150 for a new oil pan if it’s not covered so I’m not too worried, just wondered if anyone else had this issue.
