@DC3 installed an actuator. It significantly improved the frequency in which it triggered the P00AF, but he ultimately had the turbo replaced.

I've got a call in with the local dealer, just waiting for a call back. Might as well get the HPFP and recent steering box recalls done at the same time, though I'm weary of doing the HPFP with all the reports of folks seeing fuel issues after having them replaced.

EDIT: Truck goes in the 27th

Our 2023 (December build) Gladiator came factory with the updated pump. Our 2015 and 2020 Ram EcoDiesel got the recalled pump. We haven't experienced any issues.

I've got the recall CP4 fuel pump. Zero issues with it.

I replaced only the actuator. Stand-alone actuators are difficult to find.

As @biodiesel suggested, replacing the actuator substantially reduced the frequency of the P00AF code, although it did not eliminate it.

Ultimately, my turbo failed. During the several hundred miles preceding the turbocharger failure, P00AF began occurring much more frequently. The turbo ultimately failed while I was pulling a trailer through Chicago. I did not hear any unusual noises before or during the failure. Because the symptoms initially appeared to be related to boost measurement or control rather than an obvious mechanical failure, I first suspected the MAP sensor. A subsequent borescope inspection pointed to internal turbocharger damage.

Unfortunately, I was not able to disassemble or inspect the failed turbo afterward. The vehicle was also experiencing coolant consumption and combustion gases in the cooling system, and the long block was eventually replaced under warranty.

I cannot determine whether the turbo was already deteriorating and the increasingly frequent P00AF codes were an early symptom, or whether the replacement actuator’s indexing or calibration contributed to the failure. My current view is that the turbo was probably already developing a mechanical problem, but without actuator-position data or a teardown of the failed turbo, I cannot establish the cause.

Does anyone know whether the waste gate from the Ram trucks are the same?

The EcoDiesel doesn't use a wastegate per se. Nonetheless, the same turbo (68602174AA) is used for the Jeep and Ram.

We've had our 21JLURD and 22JTRD and My mother in law had her 21JLUD Sahara HPFP done also. I haven't noticed any differences in anyway with all 3 of them. They were done early March 2024.

It’s an electronic wastegate/actuator instead of vacuum to control boost.

Good to know that they are the same turbo used.

These are variable vane type like most others? VW uses the Bosch VNT turbos. Similar issue on the TDI engines. Under load the command is higher than actual. EGR gasses contaminate the vanes and prevent full actuation. Fix would be the vanes, not the actuator.

To prevent the issue with the TDI's, 1 exercise the vanes frequently, 2 install an oil catch can to prevent egr gasses from clogging the intake and vanes, 3 get rid of the egr.

Experienced my first derated recently going from Ely to Utah due to heat soaped. I usually leave it idling when stopped for a quick cigarette break, but forgot to do it this time. Pulled back on to the highway and it wouldn’t go more than 35mph. Boost gauge indicated 4 psi with the gas pedal nearly to the floor.

That's correct. The EcoDiesel uses a Variable Geometry Turbocharger which is controlled by the actuator. The actuator adjusts the internal vanes to manage boost and efficiency. A wastegate is a bypass valve that vents exhaust to manage boost. A VGT (Variable Geometry Turbocharger) replaces the need for a wastegate.
