Guys take a deep breath...

A couple of points.

As we know the space between the wheel wells is something like 44” so a sheet of plywood won’t fit on the bottom of the bed.

We also know that the designers have cleverly devised a way to partially lower the tailgate that will be level with the top of the wheel wells. As I understand it there are recesses in the bed sides to allow you to put 2x4’s or 2x6’s across to help support your sheet goods. If that is done there will be plenty of space for your 4x8 sheet of plywood.

One of our trucks (I own a construction company) is an old 2007 Ranger and we can easily carry plywood in it (not very many though!) and the bed is probably smaller than the Gladiator.

What a hoot Steffen707!!! Can’t wait to see a picture of that. And if it don’t fit (from the right side of the gas fill to the right side of the cab) then please also post a post of a Jeep rep there with major egg on their face.

It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t fit in the right side of the gas fill bump. The plywood will butt up to the face of that spot and be flat all the way onto the tailgate. I don’t see the plywood touching the back of the truck bed (against the passenger cabin) because the bump is there. It just will stop at that bump.

My only concern is that heavy plywood could dent that bump and possibly break the gas fill line. Hopefully they make that bump out of good, strong material so that could never happen.

I don’t think it dents unless you smash it in with all of your might. Slide sheets in and secure them down so they don’t slide around with a hard brake, no problems.

I’m thinking they designed it to receive plywood. Let’s speculate that everything will be ok.
I think some people are genetically engineered to speculate that everything will be horrible and the only people who design cars are high-school dropouts who’ve never actually driven or used a vehicle.

I like your plan better.

I don't know what to call them, but there are vertical "bed rails" at the tail gate, that are something like 49" between them (see the truck bed video in the other thread). The bed then gets wider to something like 55". The fuel fill bump, likely, sits within this protected space.

A sliding cooler, etc is going to do more damage to the fuel fill bump than a 4'x8' sheet of plywood due to the distance traveled won't provide enough force to actually damage it, so have Mike Tyson hit you from 1" away, then let him wind up and let one fly.

Can't tell half the time if people on here are actually on here for the love of these things or because they don't like the competition for the vehicles their companies make and are trolling as part of a 'disruption' campaign.

Hey Lanyard all I was doing was pointing out something that may be of concern to people, nothing more, nothing less, no hidden agenda. I am just like most everyone else here, a Jeep enthusiast doing a little homework for a major money investment.

Nothing wrong with pointing out something that could be an issue out of genuine concern. It’s only when you start speculating and presenting said speculation as fact, or endlessly pointing out faults while never posting anything positive that it becomes trolling.

True, but nobody in this board has ever posted nothing but a string of ‘possible problem with’ posts filled with speculation and minutia, have they? :giggle:

The plywood/drywall test is such an overused measure of the utility of a truck bed. Nearly everyone I know who mentions this during the purchase of their truck has never hauled a single sheet of plywood or drywall with it. Contractors aren't buying quarter-ton trucks like this to run their business.

Is it nice to have that capability? Yes. I'm glad FCA thought about it but I'd much rather they spent their time making sure the bed of the Gladiator was adequate for hauling coolers, camping gear boxes, bikes/kayaks/etc and other outdoor gear, recovery gear, fishing gear, freezer fridges, a full load of firewood, can adequately support bed racks and can support a RTT with the full static weight of a 4-person family in it, can fit a 37-40" tire strapped down laying flat in the bed, can fit a full set of 5 oversize offroad tires and wheels when I replace the OEM stuff and haul it all to the tire shop, and on and on.

I fully agree with you JEEPN X4. I personally would not be hauling plywood in my Gladiator. But I certainly would load a beer cooler. And hopefully the bed will be tall enough for most coolers covered under a hard tonneau cover. I started the thread so folks could just be aware of this potential possible issue and as I suggested about the plywood, “load carefully.” Hopefully for everyone it’s plenty strong metal there.

This is not a Toyota we're talking about. Jeep is actually building this cargo box out of steel, so the odds of cracking it by hauling plywood are extremely small. I guarantee it'll take a beating.

i frequently post new photos, new videos and the utmost enthusiasm for 4x8 sheets of plywood and fingers crossed for less than $3k over JL pricing.
