For those folks that have aftermarket exhausts - in particular those with louder exhausts...
Did you guys opt to keep the auto-start/stop feature on?
I can imagine those with ATAK-type exhausts scaring the shit out of children and small dogs each time it restarts at red lights. Or being marginally annoying.

Yes. I installed the Borla ATAK in March of 2020. Love the sound and the quality. It is not as loud as I thought it would be, but it can be loud if you're high in the RPM's. With the start/stop I barely notice it and my wife has a JLUR with the same motor and stock exhaust, so I have seat time with both setups.

No issues at all with the start /stop and my AWE exhaust. Like the Borla ATAK it’s also pretty loud at higher rpm’s.

If you are off roading, you want the QUIETEST truck you can find...
My off road toy is a JKR with a aFe high-tuck rear muffler that adds just a little sound level to the exhaust. I put it on for clearance, but I can tell you that being able to hear what the engine is doing without having to look at the tach is a big advantage when off roading. I agree that you don't want anything obnoxious & loud, but hearing the engine is a benefit.

LOL, dude, you're hearing exhaust NOT your engine.

The noises you want to hear for your engine are coming out front, not 10' down range

I want ZERO exhaust noise, so I can hear what is happening under the hood...

I want to hear how my tires are rolling on turf...

I want to hear the engine...

I do NOT want to hear exhaust
The exhaust sound is from the engine. Caps lock LOL added for dramatic effect.

Guess listening with the hood cracked open was stupid for all these years...
Yes, agreed ... because every decent mechanic listens for engine concern noises on the trail inside the cab by keeping the hood cracked open. /me rolls eyes

You're funny. I like you.

Yup, because I totally said "every decent mechanic listen for exhaust concern noises on the trail inside the cab..."

/me rolls eyes to self-validate through forced sarcasm

My wife has NO muffler on her JLU and it's not as loud as one would think. Also her ESS has worked 4 times since we purchased new in 2018, and we're ok with that. Also helps on the trails to hear where the engine is at. Also wanted to note that I'm an ASE Certified mechanic by trade, and listening to the exhaust is a great way to hear what your engine is doing. Just thinking out loud.

Certainly louder without a muffler than with.

OP asked about louder mufflers than stock. I assumed, wants louder, because it is louder.

Arguing for a louder system to better diagnose engines is ridiculous.
Never said it diagnoses anything better. I said I use it to hear what the engine is doing. Read the message again buddy

Diagnosis is not what's going on here. You made that connection on your own. This is simply to be able to easily hear engine revs while off-roading, which can be useful when dealing with obstacles. That is not diagnosis.

If I'm out wheeling, exhaust noise is just another tool I can use to understand what's going on.

If I'm broken down and needing to diagnose a problem, I have a completely different approach that is not based on exhaust (although exhaust can be used to aid in diagnosing certain issues).

It's not hard to see the difference here bud.

Relax.
