There was the knockout game, which old people should be in fear of.

A couple years ago in a Seattle suburb 2-3 criminals tried to break into a home late at night, identifying themselves as police.

So remember, boys and girls:

Quick little story though...

Some years ago me and the ole lady were sleeping when I heard this crashing sound in the living room. Sounded like someone breaking out a window almost. I jumped up, grabbed the 870 that leans up in the corner by the bed, clicked off the safety (it stays chambered)

"WTF WERE YOU GONNA DO IF IT WASNT BALLOONS?!"

🤣

2 things on this one:
1) Round selection is PARAMOUNT!!! I don’t know what rounds you’re running but have to consider penetration of the house structure. I run target loads for home defense. The Cancer awareness pink ones. I know I have kids and pets in the house and don’t want 00 going through the drywall and hitting what I don’t want to hit. Testing at the range led me to choosing the rounds I use for home defense. 7 rounds of target load is going to stop most threats and give Billy the Bad Man a really bad day.

2) Don’t keep it chambered. 2 of the best home invasion deterrents are a dog with a loud bark and the sound of a shotgun being racked. Most burglars (read not on drugs) hearing those 2 sounds will reconsider. Only takes a second to rack a round and should be included into your training.

Just my $.02.

Disagree. You cannot achieve the CONUS patch if they run away.

Sarcasm.
I never want to be in that situation. And I likely never will.

Short story time - I knew a couple that were victim to a home invasion. They had a dog. Intruder brought steak. The husband and wife were able to beat and subdue the intruder with a bat, but it was a brutal struggle. Afterward, she sought training and became a firearms instructor for women.

The *complete* story is a tragic story that involves a worthless individual who gets way too much sunshine on his ass that I'm not going to spill here.

That shotgun is loaded with PDX1 I believe.

Nobody in the house to worry about as far as wall penetration goes. But that's a great consideration, and I am moving soon to where the current ole lady and kiddos are - and so once I do that re-thinking the loads would be a worthwhile exercise.

We don't have a dog (nor do we want one), and I know there is varying opinions on keeping a defense shotgun at the ready. I think keeping one ready to go is fine, but again when I move I may switch to keeping the chamber empty as there will be more humans around day to day.

Now, everyday carry weapons - they stay read to go...

That is so cool. My 4yo son likes trains right now.

No one is threatening your manhood. I don't feel the need to carry a gun. Ever. I have a brother who lived a soft life who collects firearms and goes to a TRT clinic. So I will say the same thing that I tell him "change the channel(S)" because I tend to live what's left of my life and not train so I can be in a constant state of fear.
I rode a motorcycle until I couldn't. Sometimes with a helmet sometimes without but I had insurance. If you accidentally kill someone are you insured? Is the weapon insured?
I choose not to make that mistake and gun owners can't stand it.
I train because I like to. Not out of fear.

You have hobbies, we have hobbies. Mind your hobbies.

What are you "training" for?
Primarily…. Self Defense…

However… there’s a HUGE world of competitions out there thru various national leagues. Do some research on USPSA & Steel Challenge. It’s HUGE…. and all over the country (and probably world too). You can be a complete novice - you can compete in these things as long as you meet the requirements and the SAFTEY Rules. The folks in the community are so nice & helpful.

My husband and I did one Fun Steel Challenge last fall. That was fun… We plan on getting more involved with these comps when the weather gets warmer. It’s a whole lot more fun than standing at the range shooting stagnant paper targets.

It’s a mixture of Accuracy & Speed…..Being as accurate as you can as fast as you can. So…. you get ‘timers’ and you practice various drills to improve your speed & accuracy.

At my buddies place he has a Texas shooting star and a few resettable target trees.

The Texas shooting star is a hoot with my .22 AR15. You have to triple tap moving plates to knock them out 😄

Shooting steel, especially moving steel, is a lot of fun.

I run both pistol and tactical 2 gun matches, great fun and an excellent way to improve skills. In the last 2 years we have seen a large increase in new shooters, especially women, at our January 2 gun match we had 6 women shooting and the weather was not nice.

Sample stage from one of our summer matches. We try to keep the shooting realistic rather than just for speed and shooters seem to love it, we are typically seeing 60 shooters at our monthly matches.

And to keep it tied to the thread about 95% of my shooters are running optics on their pistols, you can do without but it is very hard to be competitive.

Love shooting Steel when we can.... Our club doesn't allow it. They used to have Steel events.
Between the older members and some folks who complain about getting hit with lead/copper pieces... The exec board put a stop to it. 🙄

My hubs became part of the exec board a couple months ago. We're hoping we can make some changes as time goes on.....

Hell... We'd buy a Texas Star and a Duelling Tree if we had a place we could shoot them.

Awesome!!! I love seeing more ladies get involved!!!
There's a National Women's League called "A Girl & A Gun" - there are chapters all over the country. I joined my local chapter. They meet once or twice a month at a local sponsoring indoor range. They have classroom time to teach various things, have range time, then out for pizza. THere are national events, and Marksmanship programs to work thru. It's very cool...especially for any ladies whom don't have 'someone' to share the hobby with and don't want to go the range by themselves.

For me....I'll never be good enough to be 'competitive'.... As long as I'm not on the bottom...and having fun....I'll be happy!

Thank you - to you and all the other folks... It is you seasoned competitors whom take us newbies under your wings and get us excited about it!

Shooting steel story:
So we used to take different things to the range to shoot so we could get the experience of shooting them and see how rounds reacted going through different media. Car doors car windows house doors of different construction drywall plywood things like that. We took a propane tank out once to do this with. So buddy lines up on it and fires. Single round 9mm ball hits the tank with a satisfying “ting” but then we heard a thump behind us. We’re kinda like ok it ricocheted he probably heard that. He lined up on it again and we called to him. He’s like “I know I know”. Aimed in and fired again. Another “ting” and another thump then we yelled. He was hitting right above the weld line on a 20lbs tank and the round was bouncing up and back behind us. His reaction was “oh”. Good times. :CWL:

The little green tanks are fun even when they're empty. They let out a puff and bounce around when they release the remaining pressure inside.

That's the price of admission shooting steel. Not to make little of it, though. I've seen some damage.

Our club was almost as bad controlled by old board members, only interested in trap and old school silluoette shooting. We started with pistol matches and getting younger people involved, it took a few years but now we have complete control of the club and it is growing faster than any other time. We do stuff at our 2 gun shoots that most other ranges will not allow, quite a bit of run&gun, shooting from moving golf carts and night shoots.

For the steel as long as you keep the minimum safe distance of 7 yards with a pistol you should not get any spalling hitting you and always use firearm rated steel.
