I have 5.13 and it's definitely not too much gear for 37s. Maybe with an unloaded Glad on 37s for commuting. But for long trips, loaded and mountain passes, people should go with 5.13s. Also, people rarely go down in size. Always larger.
I second this, 5.13's and BFG 37" (a small 37 to say the least) and I'm very comfortable at 75.

I always recommend "overgearing" if given the option. At the end of the day, you are driving a brick on wheels. Understand that, nothing you do will make the jeep any more aerodynamic or MPG friendly at Highway speeds. The only thing you can do to significantly improve MPGs on the highway is to drive slower. This is 100% an aerodynamics issue and very little to do with the drivetrain.

Overgearing will help you make up for all the heavy crap we bolt to our Jeeps, allow it to tow and still be used as a truck, and make it much more enjoyable around town. I can run 85 in mine and don't ever feel the motor is over-revving or burning up the engine, I just understand my mileage is going to suck because I'm driving a Jeep.

I have an appointment on the 27th to have Dana Spicer 4.88s installed by a large company that specializes in re gear. But,,, I am having 2nd thoughts about it as my JTR runs so good as it is. True, I don't see 8th a lot but it accelerates great and uses 6th as the go to gear as its 1:1 for power and strength. My BFGs are 36.5 in diameter. Someone please convince me that going to 4.88s is a wise thing to do an will really help it. I don't want to be wound out in 8th doing 80 as 8th is a .67 overdrive and possibly the weakest gear. Someone that knows our transmissions please help..
Can't go wrong with Dana's gears. Haven't heard many issues with Dana either.

Right now I have the 315 Kenda Walmart specials. Not looking to put on anything bigger. I love having a manual transmission, but it can be underwhelming at times.
Which brand gears did you go with if you don't mind me asking? Thanks

You’ll turn 2,400-2,500 RPM at 80 mph in 8th gear with 36” actual height tires and 4.88 gears. Not wound out at all.

I’d go with 5.13 for 37s.

No worries about overdrive being a weaker gear. Not enough power to do damage and it will just downshift if you use the skinny pedal.

Revolution gears. My original choice was Dana. However, the shop I went to Globex Performance uses Revolution. These guys are real Jeepers, I like that they treat my Jeep like their Jeep, & they all have Jeeps. They do a lot of regears & the price was good. That’s difficult to find in New Jersey these days. They will be installing my Centerforce clutch as soon as this 6mt recall is completed.

I’ve got 5.38’s on 37’s with the 8-speed. I sit at 2650 at 80mph. Never once have I thought that my engine was too wound out at this speed or RPM. I do have the recurrent thought almost daily at how happy I am with 5.38’s, as my Jeep feels like it has a ton of power, acceleration, and is awesome to drive. I spent a ton of time using off-road cruise control at the Black Hills Jeep jamboree. More often than not, the computer preferred using 8th gear to crawl around the trails (which was wild to me). I had zero issues and tons of power to turn the tires. I wound up in 5.38’s simply because 5.13’s were so backordered; best thing that ever happened to me. My advice is to go deeper than 4.88’s, especially for the money you are spending.

You guys have calmed me and 4.88s it will be. The place doing them, Primier West Gears has a waiting list for a few weeks so they must be good and are very well known. Going from 4.10s to 4.88s should be a real win.

Premier West did mine in september with 5.13 from Revolution. Also did the REM polish since i had a trip planned right after the regear. Do a cash deal for more discount. Only took about 3 hours.

Yep, the guy with the strange accent answered his own question. High HP + 37’s + 5.38’s + flogging the truck = broken gears every time.

5.38’s + 37’s with stock HP and I’ve been fine (but as they say, “your results may vary”). I’m also completely cognizant off-road that gassing out of a problem with possible wheel hop can shock-load my gears and lead to damage. That being said, I don’t really enjoy driving off road doing anything other than crawling down trails at slower speeds, just what I like. So for me, steeper gears work. I didn’t think 5.38’s are right for everyone, especially if someone else’s off-road driving involves really loading the gears. Probably safer for those types to stick with 4.56 or 4.88.

I’m not the smartest dude in the world, but I could have predicted a broken truck as soon as they added a SC to 5.38’s, though I’m sure the power was amazing! For the record, I agonized over my choice with a stock motor. I also purchased Dana gears, which I believe contribute to my success.

I'm sure you know what you're doing. I just thought it was interesting to see all the mashed up teeth. Those guys break everything. I think they're going back to 4.10s. Cool to see how hard they can push things, especially with lots of power and a heavy load.

Looks like the 4.88s are the favored ratio due to pinion size.
I am also getting the REM polish. Several reasons to get that. The gears will pretty much finish the big mods list.

I did get a gear oil change after the trip, a little over 1k miles. The service guy said he saw some metal. I didn't bring my glasses so I took his word on it. Just something to think about.

I'll probably do a quick drain as the ARB covers have a drain. I expect to see nothing. I have several bottles of Torco RGO85-140 GL-6 from a previous life. Torco also has a synthetic line ,,SGO 75-90 and 75-140. Also a GL-6.

If memory serves, Premier recommended 75w 140.
