We had a 2019 Pro 4R along with our Mojave for about 4yrs.

The 5 speed in the 4R is garbage IMO, while there aren't any reliability issues I'm aware of it is always painfully under geared. Fuel economy and acceleration really suffer as a by product.

I can certainly agree on fuel economy. Even with 35s my JTM gets 17 city and up to 21 hwy. The 4R is 16, doesn't matter where, always 16.

The 4R really only shined in terms of dead simple reliability for us. We've had a 4Runner for over 10yrs and never had an issue outside of batteries dying after 2-3 years.

A few months back I ended up renting a TRD-Offroad for the three-hour drive home from airport. I did not like it one bit. I drove a friends lifted 4Runner a bit and found it better than the Tacoma but very ponderous, even compard to the JT.

I don't remember how the 4runner transmission was, unremarkable likely, but the Tacoma automatic was atrocious. It just could not pick a gear and was constantly hunting in what were very benign driving conditions. That powertrain as a whole served to remind me how excellent the 3.6-8HP combo is.

The 2023 Tacoma and 2024 4Runner are the last offroad Toyotas I would consider. Their quality/reliability has absolutely tanked for their updated models, and have since moved to 4 cylinder turbo charged engines, hard pass!

My 2 cents, if even worth that.....I love 4 Runners, but Toyota quality wasn't any better than my JK, JL, or JT. I had a wheel vibration in one that they could never solve and minor electrical issues in the other. But I loved them. One thing I much prefer with the Jeeps, though....You sit up like in a chair. The 4 Runners had me sitting on the floor. This is a big deal for my 6'5" frame. Neither towed as well as my JL and especially the JT.

The 4 Runners were good, but not nearly as stable off-road, particularly in off-camber situations. IFS just simply cannot compete with solid axles for stability and traction.

I was going to say that neither my Jeeps nor 4 Runners ever left me stranded, but I almost forgot about my JK stranding me with an electrical issue caused by the sway bar disconnect. When I unplugged it, everything was fine. It has about 170,000 miles on it at the time. One of my 4 Runners left my ex wife stuck in an intersection when it's computer brain overloaded and it shut off with dash lights flashing. She had to shut it down and wait for about 5 minutes. She restarted and drove off. Never happened again, but she didn't like that truck after that. She wound up with a 2021 JL that has been 100% reliable, as my JL (100,000 miles) and JT have been. Heck, even my 1993 YJ batted 1000 on reliability. I owned it 10 years and 125k miles. My JK was around for 17 years and 193,000 miles with very few issues and many times taking some pretty rough cross country off-roading trips. (Moab twice, and just about everywhere else east of there.)

Certainly the 4 Runners are nice and quiet on the road and the steering was better. The Jeeps can't compete there. Not even close. Ride quality was similar, though. My JT gets better mileage. Best I could do in either of my 4 Runners was about 19mpg highway. JT averages 21mpg highway with 35's and a lift. I'm still really surprised at how well it does.

2022 Jeep Gladiator Mojave. First Jeep.
I had a bought new 2019 4Runner TRD Pro (first owned 4Runner) and disliked it very much. I found it to be uncomfortable for less than a 200 mile drive. Mind you, I am just not an SUV type. Hate the whole rear window wiper thing and such the messy rear end of vehicle.
I really did not feel much of a ”fun factor.”
I could not even have 1” wheel spacers with the stock tires and a 2” lift, without rubbing the mudflaps. As soon as it was lifted, it immediately had the whole needle bearing issue thing too.

As soon as I discovered the Mojave in mid-late 2021, I absolutely had to have one. My self ordered 2022 Mojave is my first Jeep and I absolutely love it. It is my 10th. vehicle, since I was 16 y/o (now 52) and all were bought new. Probably my most favorite. I did have a 2012 Tundra Crewmax “Rock Warrior,” that was a straight up BEAST and sometimes miss, but I just love this Jeep more.

my 2017 4 runner was the only vehicle I ever lemon law’d. Beautiful blueish purple color but man that thing was hot garbage.

Of course I may have to do the same thing with the cyber. Still waiting on right rear motor replacement :(

What is this 'Toyota quality' I hear about....

On my 3rd Tacoma work truck and they've all been unreliable pieces of shit.

I just traded in my 2022 Tacoma for a 2024 Gladiator. So far loving the Gladiator.

Check out the new Land Cruiser too. It's based on the Lexus GX/Prado chassis and closely related to the 4Runner but with the next generation engine.

The last company truck I had to Drive was a Toyota, what a joke. I absolutely 💯 % despised that thing. Put 50,000 miles on it and everyone was misery. From the sound system to the cornering the steering to the having to be in 4wd to climb and uphill grade. I wouldnt buy a Toyota if it was the last 4WD on earth.
Boss man said oh they just hold up.. yeah whatever. Funny He drove a Ram 2500 with a Cummins. If they was so good He should have bought himself one for a personal vehicle .

I had 2 Toyota FJs. Great trucks. Still have one of them. 230,000 trouble-free miles.
