Roof Rack at bed level

I don't want a tonneau cover; I want to mount a roof rack at or just above the top of the bed. Why may you ask? At this point I don't even know anymore other than it's become an obsession. The kits I see online simply mount the rack too high for my taste (looking at you Front Runner) and frankly just cost too much money.

the hardware is out there, I just don't know what to look for.

any suggestion? could the cargo management system be used?

let's call this an exercise in resourcefulness.

Not sure if you’re looking for a full rack system like the Maximus posted above but both Thule and Yakima make cross bars that attach to rail system in the bed.

yeah, I've looked at that. the irony is I already have their sports bar.

my original idea was to mount a small basket or rack to the rear of the sports bar (the elevated area) but I don't think its rated to support much weight.

so, next best thing is to use the cargo management rails.

I did find this on the front runner site (FRONT RUNNER UNIVERSAL LOAD BED LEG / MEDIUM (PAIR) - Rugged Outlander ) but I need to take some measurements to see how tall that would make it above the bed line.

drinking and planning don't always go hand in hand



Edit: the more I look at this the more I think this may be exactly what I'm looking for and too stubborn to realize it.

Haha. No worries.

I know JCR makes a cargo basket for the gladiator bed but I think it mounts to their own bed rack.

However, I think you might be able to rig something using their mounts to bolt to the cargo rails.

You said no crossbars but now sure how many options you'll have. Here's my setup with KBvoodoo and a Yakima basket. Using Plano Trunk boxes keeps everything under roofline and getting unchanged fuel economy on our camping trips. Oh and I'm able to run the Bestop Rollup Tonneau for anyone interested.
