My 2020 gladiator auto, with approx 53k miles on it recently started shifting hard. Especially in the mornings. Seemed to surge and then shift between 2nd and 3rd.

I still have my powertrain warranty as it’s within the mileage threshold, so I dropped it off at the dealer Monday at a 7am appointment.

Today they reset / relearn the shift points but that didn’t solve the problem. S.A. Says likely needs a new transmission and they are keeping it another night to 3D image it. She didn’t seem to know what that meant so hopefully she’ll go back to the tech and get me more details.

anyone have a similar experience?

No biggy, like any other vehicle, it happens. Not common, but it happens. You see things like that on the internet because, like you, others come to report the problem, see if they have company, seek solutions, compare notes, whatever (and a few just to gripe).
It's not a massive major issue with these. The transmissions have a good reputation and have been used in Jeeps for quite some time, including Grand Cherokee, Wrangler and so on.
What you experienced was actually pretty typical of how automatics often fail (aside from those that decide to simply stop moving at all, or lose reverse, for example)

Thanks SP.
I’m not overly concerned, definitely want to share notes with others. I do think my SA is fairly new, and didn’t mean to say 3D Scan—but who knows. I will ask them how the sonogram went ?

hopefully its a smooth process!

Well... My 23 does this same thing w/ 8500 miles. I did the reset/relearn and it didn't help. Mine gets dropped off Wednesday of next week to get the surge/slamming between 2-3rd checked out. This will be the 2nd visit for this issue so we'll see what happens.

They called and said they initiated the powertrain warranty process and I am unable to pick up the vehicle because of this. They also said it’s back ordered. I have multiple camp trips in July where I need the jeep.
Can they, or do they have to, hold the jeep even if the transmission isn’t available and is on back order? Or if they started the process, why would I not be able to take the jeep home until it’s in stock?

So you have a transmission that's failing, and you want to drive it all summer?
Should that thing literally lock up while on the interstate or shut down, then who do you yell at.
Sorry, you said the transmission is bad but still want to drive it. If it was mine, I'd park it.

I've done enough transmission work to know that once it gets to a point, you can have literally catastrophic failure that leaves you dead stopped in the middle of an interstate - even to the point of locking and causing the truck to skid or slide. I've seen things get so bad a servo busted off the case and the transmission locked solid as a rock and the car stopped NOW, right where it was. No coasting at all. Boom, it's stopped. Can't push it, can't pull it.
I bet they don't want the liability of someone getting hurt.

It may be fine - or not, but if it's acting up, you could plug the filter with debris from clutch plates and disks, whatever.
They never get better - and you don't really know what it looks like inside.

They were able to get me a truck as a loaner so overall positive experience.

and yeah, I would not want to risk any of those events you mentioned. Good point. Thanks!

They are replacing my entire transmission at 54k miles for this exact issue. It slams into 4th gear and sometimes will not go from 3rd to 4th at all without turning off the engine and trying again. It's also starting to slam into Reverse. Diagnosis took ten days--but all the work and parts are being done under warranty. They already have received the new transmission but are waiting on one bracket they need to complete the job.

Hope these new ones last longer than our previous ones. Anecdotal, but do you live in mountains ? do you manually downshift on declines?

Live in the flatlands. Never manually shift.

Manual shifting, if anything, should prolong life unless done in ways that increase the transmission temperature. it's recommended to manually shift if the temps are running high or it's hunting.
I've manually shifted automatics for many years and unless dropping a gear at a high speed and really shock loading it, should be no problem.
