I'd be pulling plugs and checking condition, and running a compression test. Thats extreme oil blowby for a N/A anemic engine.

Pcv is suspect abd probably easier to fiddle with.

I'd be borescoping the intake manifold looking for oil. To try and determine if this is a new thing or old thing.

Regardless, this isnt normal.

Been thinking about the pre ignition knocking you’ll hear when you go to take off after the hot soak is done and I’m wondering if it would help to eliminate that by filling the tank with high octane gas before you do this. ??

We put 285,000 miles on our 3.6 Grand Cherokee, without a single Seafoam, catch can, spark plug, or anything at all besides 1 set of brakes and oil every 10-11k with whatever builk fill the dealer was using.

Looks like this 3.6 need a dual catch can set up like I developed for my '04 Colorado ZQ8 with the 3.5L inline 5. Both the exhaust and intake side of the PCV system are sucking tons of oil. I might try to reach out to either J&L or Mishimoto since I've worked with them in the past.

I'm going to start working on a dual can set up this week.

When you noticed all this oil crap coating all that, did you spray down the intake parts with brake clean and the sensor with MAF sensor cleaner? (It’s not a mass air flow sensor, it’s an air temp regulator or something). I’ve had my throttle body off a couple times and sprayed it down with throttle body cleaner.

I also mentioned earlier I changed out my plugs and when the upper intake manifold was off, that got a good soaking with brake clean before it went back on and I replaced the PCV valve but here’s what puzzles me, …looking at the intake tube AFTER the air filter, there’s all this crappy oil residue that entered the “fresh air IN” port. Fresh air enters the crankcase at the back of the engine on the drivers side and is not valved there. Also, there is an elevation drop in the hose where the port exits the intake tube and drops down a few inches in elevation to where it enters the back of the engine.

I’m trying to understand why the “fresh air IN” is acting like blowby air OUT as in the PCV when it’s not valved there nor is it a PCV.

So I don’t understand how oil can climb up in elevation and make it to the intake tube to crud it all up in there when it’s fresh air in?? Someone please explain this. Now then speculating as good as I can,…your PCV valve is plugged or not working as designed so the blowby air is forced to go out the IN tube and that’s what we’re all seeing here.

I took off the TB yesterday, sprayed it and wiped it clean. Be sure you order a new gasket to put in. I also wiped out the intake after the TB and the air intake. Recently replaced the MAS. 2020 with 48k. It definitely needed some cleaning, but I did not see anything concerning. I pour in fuel system cleaners every now and then try to run Costco gas but that is hit or miss.

Several years ago, my 08 wrangler was burning a quart of oil every 2500 miles. The mechanic put 2 cans of seafoam directly into it. He said huge amounts of black smoke came out. It never burned a drop between changes (5k) after that.

So a follow up........yeah my useless or over tasked ass still has not done the Seafoam clean out yet. I wanted to collect more data and see if there is a method to the madness here.

At +/- 21,500 I installed the J&L catchcan

At 22,360 I drained a measured 2 fl oz of oil from the can.

At 24,145 I drained a measured 3 fl oz of oil from the can ......these PCV systems are sucking a shit ton of oil. See attached pictures.

So time to go science guy and figure out a way to mitigate the oil consumption. In my 04 Colorado I had to come up with a dual can set up and add reducers to slow the suck for a lack of better terms. It was the 3.5l inline 5.

Remember - if you have a catch can and are catching pure oil, for every ounce you catch, your crankcase is at least that much lower.
So if you catch much oil, you need to keep watch on the dipstick. (and question the performance of the PCV in that engine because most don't do that)

Since mine will go 7,000 miles and not be even half a quart low, that's telling me I don't have a PCV or other issue.

PCV valves can and do go bad.
I asked one of the busiest Jeep shops in our area to save me a used PCV valve.
It took them over a month to replace one so they could give me the used valve (I'll post more on that later.)
So although it happens, it's not totally common if it takes that long for a shop to get me a used one as busy as they always are.

We used to use a Wynn's product that worked a lot like Seafoam and for that matter, Seafoam may just be a modern version. It really worked wonders when a car would come in with "knock" due to carbon build-up and other issues we knew were carbon buildup related.
Yeah, the smoky trail you left meant that area had no bugs for a long time, but in almost every case, it resolved the issues.
We also used water to resolve hard carbon build-up on older vehicles - a Coke bottle of water poured slowly down the carburetor - as quick as possible but not to let it die while running the engine at a fast idle.

I'm a believer in the upper cylinder cleaners - since about 1973 or so

Brings me back to the days of my 09 with the 3.8, it ate 1.5-2 quarts every 3,000-5,000 miles , and that was after Jeep rebuilt it twice due to the same issue. Eventually put a Jasper in and it was fixed.

I'm at 90k miles and my last oil change showed almost a quart low. TBH I may have gone over 5k miles on that oil. Anyway, I do have a shudder at idle. I need to replace the variable valve sensor (I think that is what it is called), and I want to change spark plugs, PCV, and add a catch can. What is a good, not-break-the-bank catch can?

I'm doing my oil changes on avg every 4500-5000 miles with no significant oil loss. The ultimate point, is all of this shit is getting dumped into the intake track which condones or contributes to ping, knock or a piss poor burn. The combustion cycle is supposed to be air, fuel and spark.........oil is not part of that cycle.
