Shifting from 2H to 4H

Hey all,

New to this Jeep thing, have a 2025 Nighthawk, pretty impressed by it so far. Only have 600 miles on it and have yet to test it off road other than a muddy dirt road to the shooting range a couple weeks back.

Anyway I read the manual that explains shifting from 2H to 4H can be done standing still or rolling along, off of the accelerator of course. So I have pulled on the handle several times and it does not budge. I have tried stationary and rolling, even shifted the trans handle to "N" attempting to get it to move. I would estimate I have applied 6-8lbs of pressure, not wanting to do anything wrong. Still, no go.

Am I just being limp-wristed, or should I give it time to break in? Next call will be to dealer to ask for advice.

You can switch between 2H and 4H at will, even moving up to 45mph. It takes some force.

The first 5 or so times you go to move that transfer case lever, it is going to feel like you are using waaay too much force to get it to move. You will have to brace yourself and just yank the crap out of it to get it down into 4H.

You think shifting into 4H is hard? Try 4Low. LOL. Seriously though, I sometimes have to shift it into 4L for my wife. It's hard until it starts to get broken in. Yours will get easier over time as you use it.

I could tell the previous owner of mine never went to 4L that much. Definitely force needed. Once I found out that rolling slower helps it wasn't as bad. Agree that you just need to break it in before it gets smoother.

It's a mechanical linkage going directly to the transfer case - it requires quite a bit of force when new, and still a good bit even after its been cycled often.

2HI to 4HI - suspiciously difficult for those not used to Jeeps.
4HI to 4LO - you will be convinced you are about to break something before it moves.

I bought mine used last year with 38k on the odometer and having owned several wranglers was not going to buy it without testing the transfer. Fortunately I knew ahead of time cause that was a ***** to shift into 4L. I doubt the PO ever used the transfer.

I try to go to 4 high every time I drive mine, 4 low if I have time. The shifting has gotten much easier.

The first few times you have to really pull hard this is the way my Mojave came from the factory and all of the comments say the same thing mine is much smoother now.

If in neutral not moving just yank it. You can't break it. As all have said she gets looser over use the first few times you have to force it.

From 2H to 4H you can be in 'Drive' (...up to 45mph). To go into 4L, you must put it in 'Neutral'.
