Hello,

I am considering purchasing a 2023 Jeep Gladiator with the farout package which includes the diesel motor. I have changed my job last year and only drive about 10 miles round trip. So I am not driving a lot of miles each week. I want the diesel becasue I do pull a fishing boat that weight about 5000 lbs. I am not that familiar with the ecodiesel engine and was wondering if this would be a bad choice for an engine since I am not driving very far each week. From research I have done on this forum and other it appears short trips clog up the emission stuff on this engine. If I was to purchase would I need to drive for about 50 miles or so to clean up the emissions once a week.
Also, I have seen where the 1st and 2nd gen of this engine were not very reliable and were failing pretty early in the life of the motor. How reliable are these 3rd gen diesels and is there anything that needs to be done on a regular basis to allow engine to be more reliable.
Thanks for your advise in advance.

Change your oil and filter about every 7K miles and fuel filter ever 10K miles and enjoy it.

Your mileage will definitely suffer from short trips and you may regen more than normal but it’s nothing detrimental to the engine. You’ll enjoy the torque when pulling the boat behind you in a diesel.

I’ve had zero trouble. Every 2 to 4 weeks I’ll have a trip that gets me on the highway for over 20 minutes and have had zero issues..

I live within a 4 mile radius of work, gym, groceries and family. I have 25,000 miles of use with 0 issues. I’ve only seen the regen message I think 3 or 4 times since October of 2021. You’ll be fine.

My wife is the champion of short trips. 2-3 miles one way tops 6 times a day. We change the oil every 5k - never had the oil tested for fuel dilution amounts. ??‍♂ she gets 22 mpg in town (with 37” tires). This last week we haven’t gotten much above 25* so dropped a couple more than normal.

I have added a plug into the bumper (splitter)- one goes to the block heater, the other goes to a 2amp direct connect battery charger. Start/stop thing works with no issues.

We usually make a 45-60 minute drive once a week which helps drop the soot load in the dpf. We are at 28k miles and have only had the regen with the light, do not stop driving etc. come on one time @ around 7k miles.

I highly recommend the JScan app, it gives the ability to monitor just about everything you can think of.

also allows for a forced regen if you ever needed it.

recommend a fuel log to keep track of the location you refill at. Change the fuel filter every 10-15k miles.

use HOT SHOTS EDT. 1oz in EVERY tank….. it’s a slight added cost but worth the insurance/longevity on the fuel pump.

I’m sure I’ll catch crap for this…. VW uses the cp4 fuel pumps as well- pretty common to just replace @120k miles…. Only difference is VW has a cp3 conversion and this one doesn’t “yet”

This motor isn’t as bad as they are read out to be. Could be way worse, could be the under powered 3.6 motor that is commonly found in many vans….. ??

Our minivan engines will have the last laugh when that fuel pump explodes due to the bad fuel you picked up at the kwikimart

First of all, go for it. Follow the harsh / severe environment maintenance recommendations, buy quality fuel and use EDT.

My diesel has been a happy camper. And your mini van engine will start to make the valve rattle because of bad cam and lifters. It will happen.

I have the 3.6 and I don’t know why you would ever need more unless hauling. If that’s the case buy another truck. Also off-road the 3.6 is plenty. Especially with 5:13s. And it will outlive that desiel I guarantee it.

Don’t get too bent out of shape. I have had several 3.6’s…. It was a joke… But also don’t kid yourself either 400+ tq is awesome. For awareness I have owned a 3.6 with 5.13’s on 37’s it “worked”… I greatly appreciate not having to carry so much extra gas around off road (saline valley…).

In all seriousness, the 3.0 does have a liability with the fuel pump. And the 3.6 does have issues with the valvetrain and ignition system… ??‍♂ there is a lot more room to work on the 3.6 than the 3.0, and the 3.6 is probably sold 100:1 to the 3.0, so the aftermarket support will be greater.

I am happy with my 3.0 choice, my next jeep will be a 05/06 LJ with a 2.8L though…. (Cummins) ? too many finicky items with the new jeeps.

What was that? Can't hear you over my spark plugless motor and the valve you just dropped out of the Pentastar head...

All I can say is that I get 24mpg highway after throwing 37's on stock gears. I'm willing to bet I can get up to interstate speeds just as quickly as you if not faster than an equally equipped 3.6 with 5.13's. I would have personally not purchased a JT if it weren't for the oil burner. Longevity? I would have bought a Tacoma if that's what I was after with this thing.

I also have a new 23 Rubi diesel, Only have 1500 miles on it so far.
I put a scanguage 2 on it around the 800 mile mark so I can monitor the soot levels and if its in regen.
What I've found (and read) is once the dpf gets to 80% full, it automatically starts a regen, you only know this is happening if you have a way to monitor it (no lights or indication on the dash).
Once the regen starts, just continue driving for 15-20 min until it finishes the regen.
With a monitor (Scanguage 2 in my case, but there are others), you will know when a regen is about to happen and plan your driving around it.
With my driving habits, this happens every 10 days or so.

So far, I love the diesel.

If I would do only short trips like 10 miles and below I would never ever buy a Diesel.

At least here in Germany the most frequent problems with the Gladiator are issues with regeneration and DPF due to too much short distance driving.

I have not seen any regeneration message within 9k miles but my car has done only 5-10 trips below 20 miles up to now.

My recommendation would be the 3.6!
