How did I know this was Virginia... I got hassled over 35s and the dude made me hold the end of the tape measure before accusing me of cheating it in. Then he gave me a mudflap ticket. As a wise man once said, you're not wrong, you're just an asshole.

I do not miss that state in the slightest.

Oh the highway patrol guy made that very clear.
Is your truck really 82" wide? It doesn't look all that wide in your photos. I believe 80" is the cutoff for needing clearance lights. Makes me want to measure mine now to see where I stand. I'd be inclined to throw the stock tire set up on and go get the ticket signed off because you don't need clearance lights. I've been ticketed here in CA for mud flaps in my old xj on a dry day just because the motorcycle cop once got hit by a rock flung to by a lifted truck.

So, if running 37s like that needs special lights, then a big % of jeeps on this site are required to have these lights?
I've never heard of this rule/law.
I'm in Tx so maybe its different, but can someone show me this reg/law.
I've always thought 8 feet was the width limit.
Here is the Tx rules for width.
https://www.dps.texas.gov/section/commercial-vehicle-enforcement/maximum-width

Is this why a dually p/u has clearance lights on the cab?

The height of the tires isn't contributing to the laws broken, it's the overall width of the vehicle which includes the wheels/tire setup that may be different wheel offset and wider tire than what came from the factory. Once you get to a certain width additional lights are required to let other drivers know.

This is why the Ram TRX, F150 Raptor, Bronco Raptor etc all have the additional 3 front and rear marker lights, and their base versions do not.

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 108, (aka Title 49, Subtitle B, Chapter Five, Section 571.108 of the Code of Federal Regulations) lays out the legal details around vehicle lighting. Among the statutes you'll find this gem describing how the identification lamps should be placed on any vehicle 80 inches or wider: "On the front and rear—3 lamps, amber in front, red in rear, as close as practicable to the top of the vehicle, at the same height, and as close as practicable to the vertical centerline, with lamp centers spaced not less than 6 inches or more than 12 inches apart. Alternatively, the front lamps may be located as close as practicable to the top of the cab."

NJ is weird in that fender/fender flare widths aren't regulated unless your vehicle is lifted (i'm sure there are separate rules for commercial vehicles, but i'm not familiar with them). But regardless of whether or not a particular activity is regulated, i always view it as everyone's personal responsibility to not be someone else's "this asshole" as in: "look at this asshole"

As such, without the laws requiring it my truck has mudflaps front and rear and XR fender flare extensions to keep my poke covered up. I know if someone threw a rock at me and cracked my windshield, i'd be pissed. So the last thing I want to to crack someone else's windshield.

Nothing raises the hairs on the back of my neck like when I see some wrangler/gladiator yahoo who take off their fender flares then decide to run -25 offset. I avoid driving anywhere near these guys because they've already demonstrated they don't care if they throw rocks, which means they could at any minute. Also excuse my prejudice, but overly pokey 4x4 owners don't seem like the type willing to pull over and exchange insurance information over the damage they leave in their wake.

I generally don't usually get along with "front mudflaps only" types because to me that shows they care only about the side of their vehicle and not at all about anyone behind them. I apologize in advance to any who are a part of that group, i'm sure you're lovely people in other ways... but this one just seems almost purposefully inconsiderate.

This is Virginia. They are a stickler for rules.

That last water crossing coming out of the Union Springs side is ideal for a quick rinse.
Not sure where you wheeled or where you got pulled, but I've never heard of that happening in VA, at least not down my way in the free part of the state. LOL

This little jewel runs about 30 minutes on a 5AH battery.

I think a lot of the perceived negative responses came from your original post with you being upset that the officer wrote you tickets that you didn't feel responsible for. Had you posted that you knew you were in the wrong and you were looking for solutions you'd be getting praise and more positive responses.

Signed, Dad.

apparently flinging debris is no no. But i was on my way to a self service wash to clean it off. Don't know what else i was supposed to do.
I definitely understand. There are a couple spots in SC and NC that are like that. If you ever go to Gulches after a rain, it is very muddy. And it's red clay. The only way you can really get it off is with a pressure washer. And as much as I don't like pressure washers, have no choice. Well, the only pressure washer locations is about 10 miles away. So, you really have no choice. And when you have mud in your tires, wheels, and rotors, your wheels are unbalanced and your jeep is all over the place. It sucks.

The good thing is that Gulches get so much business and the cops pretty much know how that place gets after a rain that they don't bother you. It sucks that happened to you though.

i never said i didn't feel responsible for it. And i also stated i understood the cover plate and tail lights. but you look at that pic in the original post and you tell me thats too muddy. this isn't a not my fault post. Its a this sucks even tho its my fault, how do i fix it. The amount of old heads on here who just take everything at face value and assume lack of father figure and sign "dad" as if they are schooling a child is bit weird. besides a real father doesn't rag on a kid. They acknowledge the situation and say "i hope you learned the lesson" and recommend a damn light. Its a text, u can't grasp the tone i said it in, so its on you if you hear in the words of your son. I get ya'll mean well. But ya'll need to realize how you handle situations directly affects if someone will be honest and assume responsibility. I could've just asked "hey got raptor light recommendation?". but i didn't i said what i said because 1. i like sharing stories as they make things relatable and engaging 2. I owe it to myself to speak the whole truth and hold myself accountable. 3. I want to prove that this is a safe environment to share said truth. If you wanna make it a mocking a pit, no one can stop you. But thats no what a real guiding figure does. and if thats how you handle your children in real life, i feel bad for them.

No, i was ranting. I'm not directly mad at you or telling you to stop. I appreciate any and all input. I just would prefer if people got to the end and recommended a light as requested. I felt like a dick after re reading my response. but again it wouldn't be honest to delete it. I get what your saying and I apologize if i offended you. I was referencing more than one individual, i didn't mean to single u out either.

I get why i got the book. the trail exit was right onto the blueridge parkway. A lot of bikes ride there and debris is an issue for them. But aside from the gravel that came with my tires, nothing else fell off. and I was the only one pulled over out of my group. all 4 of my buddies just kept on going, they were just as muddy. I heckled to death when i met up at the wash.
