Well at this point I’ve towed the boat several times with no issues. This afternoon Blackjeepjk overheated. Had to go bring the little guy home. Stuck thermostat.First tow after lift for a little crappie fishing. Went with an 8” drop hitch, probably could’ve went 10”. Made loading very bad as bunks are too steep. Also if there were any questions about re-gearing, this just answered it. Have to do it.

I found that my JT with an empty trailer (1500-1600 pounds empty) sucked at towing. It struggled, hunted gears, got crap for mpg (about 11). I wasn't happy with it at all as it struggled on hills.Picked up a cow for the farm. Don’t know why but this 2021 tows worse than my 2020 did. 2020 lived in 6-7 gear but this one lives in 4-6 gears.![]()
And that is why there should be a tow/haul button - ‘nuff said.I found that my JT with an empty trailer (1500-1600 pounds empty) sucked at towing. It struggled, hunted gears, got crap for mpg (about 11). I wasn't happy with it at all as it struggled on hills.
Then I towed the same trailer with my car on it - and it did fine. Got 13.9 mpg at 65 mph, yes it revved high but no worse than my Chevy did on hills. It pulled fine.
It's almost like the empty trailer didn't tell it hey, you are towing - change modes. The extra weight on the trailer totally changed its personality.
So next time I need to take my car hauler somewhere, I'll load it down with rocks or something to make it heavier. All I can figure is it must determine whether or not you are towing by the weight behind it somehow - torque, perhaps? And it wakes up and changes shift patterns and personality with extra weight and there's some number it needs to make it happen? Just tossing stuff out there.
Did it stay warm enough in there for you?First trip in the new Gladiator/ Sunray 109 combo. Did awesome in the snow, since the 109 has nice AT tires. Got about 13.7 MPG, but expect closer to 16 in the high country in the summer. Trailer has brakes, but haven’t installed my controller yet. It’s only about 1400 lbs. I like that it’s the same width as the Gladiator, so no towing mirrors needed and easy to maneuver.![]()
I am glad you mentioned that, I ticked over 2100 and now I'm seeing a 2mpg jump on average? I was at 25.6 empty round trip averaging 70mph this past weekend.Around 390lbs in the bed plus ~100lbs of gear inside and pulling ~1850lbs.
21.5MPG doing 75mph on the interstate in low 40s/30s.
25MPG with just the dirtbike in the bed and gear in the back.
Willys diesel. I think the truck is finally somewhat broken in. I was getting worse MPG with an empty truck when it was below 3000 miles.

Yep it's a very drastic change. I think I will see even better MPG. And it started to "break in" just when I started pulling/hauling good weight. I think they like to run under some kind of a loadI am glad you mentioned that, I ticked over 2100 and now I'm seeing a 2mpg jump on average?
