I have a Sport S and am thinking about getting some Rubicon Takeoff tires/wheels. The takeoffs I am thinking about getting do not come with a spare. Is it a problem to use a Sport S spare with Rubicon tires?

The problem is the sport is a different size tire and you can not run different size tires on a 4 wheel drive

That is what I thought but wanted to check because seller said he got 37s but kept his original spare. I appreciate it!

Wait, what? Dont plenty of folks take the Falkens from the Rubicon and put them on their Sports? Wheel size is the same. I understand that the Sports use 31-32” tires (245/79/17) and Rubicons use 35” (285/70/17)

They're almost the same size. Rubicon is a 33"

Common view is have spare tire match for use - but for road use having the spare as a emergency use isnt going to be horrible. challenge is like in a small car with a save a spare having the driven axle tires match - moving spare to non driven position i.e. front axle if on hard packed - Measurement is for the tire - not the rim so you can have an unmatched rim but running a similar size tire - would be a good compromise

I always have had a full-sized spare, and always have rotated all five tires. However, I think a slightly smaller spare would be no problem just to get to a tire ship or mechanic in, at least, 99% of instances. Most flats occur while on a roadway system, and then you're driving with open diffs. It might work the diff a little harder for a few miles to the nearest shop, but I can't see that as a major calamity. Just don't lock the diff on the axle with the smaller tire, which very, very rarely would be needed.

What he said^^^^^^

Also maybe a few phone calls can find you a used 33 inch tire to use as a spare. If you're getting a good deal on the Rubicon take offs a few more bucks for a used spare might still be worth it

This is true if you are comparing apples to apples. Every tire manufacturer will differ in tire height for a posted size (example, Goodyear to Firestone, etc.) and this could be as much as 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. Another aspect has to be considered is the tread design will also affect tire diameter.

the 245 profile is 70 not 79 as you typed in the chart...

The difference is 30.5” vs. 32.7” on the Rubicon (7.2%).

There is nothing wrong with that. The spare is intended for emergency use. It needs to be similar in size, but not exactly the same. The warning about different size tires applies primarily to normal operation in 4-wheel drive mode.

There are those that prefer a spare identical to the other four and include it in regular rotation so all five wear evenly.
