JT performed admirably along the northern tip of the OBX all last week, even though the ESS light popped on once (I forgot to turn ESS off manually at startup). No CEL all week, but a repetitive knock at low RPM developed (b/t 1k-2k RPM). Taking it to a dealership that's worked on a JT w/ similar issues (one of y'all?) next week. Getting a JLU as a loaner. Will report back once I have something to share.

Lol went to dealer to have the misfires rechecked after pcm re flash was not effective, the service manager said his technical adviser said that they’re not aware that this is an issue and advised then to do a phaser cleaning and relearn the cam crank position. Hopefully this will help correct the issue.

I have driven Jeep products for 27 years and never had a problem until now. This Gladiator has a build date last fall, delivery mid-November. I have had the check engine light due to misfires repeatedly, usually in some combination with an automatic start/stop failure light. This has been to the dealership 10 times now with under 7,000 miles, various fixes tried - some leaks found, and most significant was a new left cylinder head. Light is back on today and it is headed back to the dealership.

More significantly, it has already been through the mandatory arbitration process, which was no help. Our lemon law (North Carolina) is straight forward (four more more attempts to fix or out of service 20 days or more). Even though the vehicle was out of service for over 20 days and we had 8 attempts to fix, the arbitration panel did not find this was an "unreasonable" number of attempts (although they did find that the problem was significant and could reduce the safety and value of the truck). It was clear the panel did not apply my state's law, luckily it is not binding. If they do not apply the state law, it is nothing more than a speed bump on the way to a real court. Very disappointed. Now forced to either try to work something out or sue in court. Our state does give triple damages, so Jeep may end up having to pay more than they would have before, unless they make it right. Luckily I am an attorney and can do this fairly easily. I hope others have better luck in the arbitration process.

UPDATE:
My CEL occurrences have been at the following mileages:
1st - About 900 miles (didn't log exact mileage)
2nd - 2080 miles
3rd - 3243 miles
4th - 4095 miles
5th - 4992 miles

For a while it seemed like there was a pattern. Somewhere around 850-1200 miles I'd get a CEL, usually preceded by the ESS light. I actually guessed the exact day my 4th CEL light came on the week before it happened. Since my 5th CEL however, I made it to 6684 miles with no actual attempts to fix the issue. On 8/13 the dealer was finally able to implement TSB 18-053-20. And again the dealer stated that the engine wasn't actually misfiring (idk how true that is). As of this post I'm at 6984 miles, almost 2000 miles since my last CEL. The ESS lights still happens occasionally backing out of my driveway immediately after startup, so I wouldn't say the entire issue is resolved just yet. Only time will tell if I have another CEL. I'll keep updating as things progress. At this point I have two qualified visits to the dealer to resolve this issue.
So, yesterday (10/7) I reached 10,000 miles. Since my last update I've had my JT into the dealer twice: once @ 7500 miles for an oil change and again @ 8181 miles to address the ESS issues. I had only had about half-dozen ESS lights since my TSB @ ~7000 miles, but I saw a pending P0300 code on the last two, so I took it in. I brought it in WITH the ESS light on. The service report states that they "performed software update. auto start working properly". It doesn't say whether or not they implemented the revised TSB for this. Since then, I made it to 10,000 miles without a single ESS light or CEL. I've even tried to re-create an ESS light and haven't been able to.

Apologies for the long post, but in summary, I've had ~5000 miles without a CEL and ~2000 miles without an ESS light. Both of these are far and away much greater than the previous intervals between occurrences. At this point I guess my case is resolved. If the issue pops back up I'll be back, but for now I'll just be monitoring the thread.

I firmly believe there is a software issue, but if you review the whole thread, there is a good argument for actual hardware issues. I believe those with audible sounds and such are probably those individuals.

I have seen about 6 gladiator files and there have been a number of updates to the torque model, which helps but I think it will have to be a comprehensive update to air flow torque and transmission

This whole thread has been a real help. I took delivery of my new JT on 9/17. It’s been in the shop since 9/28. The dealership has been great but keeps getting mixed messages from Star on how to fix. Now after reading this thread, they’ve known about the CEL and ESS issue since April, today is October 8th and FCA still doesn’t have a fix? Come on. Just unacceptable.
I’ve had 6 different Jeeps over the last 17 years and consider myself a loyal customer but I won’t wait forever while my JT is in the garage.

That brings to question how many of you have to use E85? I am not using E85 but I am encountering similar issues as you all.
No one has to use E85! And in fact, FCA says DO NOT use E85 - check the fuel door - there's a circle and line through 85. Where did you get the idea anyone "had to" use it?
Basically, don't do it. It's not tuned for that (and I'm not so sure the fuel system is made for it, it's more "corrosive" and harder on parts not made for it. )

Sorry wrong wording. Completely agree with you about E85.

Update on mine VVT and cam phaser being replaced.

Has anyone had their issue successfully fixed? Other than buy backs.

Hi Jeff,
I certainly understand your frustration. Do you currently have a case opened with our teams? If not, please send us a private message. We would be happy to get this process started for you.
