I was driving over a bridge on a highway earlier today and, out of nowhere, the car emergency noises go off and my car coms screeching to a halt. It is a manual so it also stalled out. I went from ~40mph to 0mph in as fast as a gladiator can stop.

Luckily, no one crashed into me and no one in the car was hurt. Maybe the sensor saw through a grate in the bridge and then saw the bridge and stopped immediately?

The collision detector malfunctioned and thought that we were in an accident (and, if not for luck, it would have caused us to be in one...) Now, i cant use cruise control and my dashboard is lit up with various issue lights - it appears that the car thinks we were in a collision

Has this happened to anyone else? I am worried about driving it thinking it may happen again

I had it happen in a parking lot in the Wrangler I had before. It got scared of its own shadow as far as I could tell. I disabled auto-stop immediately after that and made sure the Glady I bought didn't have that feature. It doesn't work nearly as well as the radar ones.

Man. That had to be terrifying and confusing and terrifying. Glad everyone is okay, first and foremost.

I hate the autobrake feature in vehicles. You can set the system to only alert you and not apply the brakes. Good middle ground so you get the alert, no system off icon on the dash, and don't have to deal with brakes.

I would take it in for sure. Especially since it's throwing warnings. And to have the sensor checked.

Had the exact same experience in my Tacoma and it's why my Jeep does not have that system. I was inches from getting cornholed by a 1-ton at 70mph who was less than thrilled when I saw him at the next gas stop. Fortunately he was much more reasonable after I explained what happened.

There is something about bridges that the system didn't like. Had it happen on three separate occasions though that one was the only full blown panic stop where it slammed brakes and didn't just beep at me.

This is precisely why I'll never, ever get the advanced safety system on any of my vehicles (as long as I have a choice) for a couple of reasons. This is after suffering through many rental cars for work that have these nanny features:

1) ACC - auto cruise. It's nice in theory, but it causes you to slow down WAY too early (yes, even after adjusting the distance setting). Enough where it causes slower people to pass you, or you need to jump out in the left lane WAY too early.

2) Emergency braking. I've had this happen when people in town are making a right turn and taking their own sweet time to fully make the turn. The system catches the corner of their bumper and locks up the car. It's happened to me twice and darn near caused an accident with the person behind me.

I really wish this upcoming generation would learn to actually drive and pay attention rather than relying on the vehicle.

As others above have stated, this is EXACTLY why I will not get 1 of these systems unless I"m able to disable it, and then only if it comes by default on the vehicle. Right now it's seen as a neat feature but how long until we're made to have it forced on us everywhere? I know this system has come close to causing wrecks several times. There were several Gladiators in my area that met all my specs exactly, except they had this in there too, I didn't buy them. Instead I took a truck that had a missing package, no big deal. ANY system that takes full control out of my hands is a no-go for me. A system that applies brakes with no way to stop it to me is just dangerous. Until the ENTIRE road and every car on it are autonomous and can communicate with 1 another, that's just a pipe dream.

Yes , It’s not a perfect system. Especially on a 4 x 4 jeep with all that comes with that. I special ordered mine without that complicated trouble. I keep my eyes on the road and use my brakes with my foot. It’s served me well for almost 60 years. I feel like I’ll make it the rest of the way without it.

This is exactly why I would never own a vehicle with any kind of autonomous crap. I know how to drive. I don't need my vehicle doing it for me. Blind spot monitoring and rear brake alert is as far as I will go. No brake assist. No lane keeping assist. Not adaptive cruise control or forward collision assist. Nope.

This happened to me in my buddy's Ram 1500 (I was in the passenger seat). We were pulling up his driveway and we think the truck "saw" his wife, who was on the grass a couple of feet off to the side. But who knows what the truck was "thinking". We weren't going very fast, but the sudden stop gave our heads a bit of a snap. Nothing major, but also not gobs of fun.

That's what happens when you let a computer do your driving

As long as I can, I will never have another of these systems. I avoided it with the JT.

I had a '16 Explorer Sport that would wig out over snowflakes. Alarms would go off, lights would flash, accelerator would go flat under my foot, start applying brakes. All over snowflakes.

OP good luck, personally I would see if it can be shut off without affecting anything else.

It does have radar and a camera both. It uses the radar for ACC, collision prevention, etc. That's how it tells if the vehicle ahead of you is moving faster or slower, and the distance.

My wife has had all of that on every Jeep she's owned that had it available at the time of purchase. We have never had it malfunction. I've had it save our butt when an idiot in the left lane swerved over in front of us and hit the brakes to turn faster than a human could have reacted - it worked great, but it's not malfunctioned in any of our vehicles.
There's no way in hell a human could have seen that moron pull over like that as fast as he did. He's one of those that refuses to fall back and go behind you to make a turn he was about to miss (typical of Iowa) - he just HAD to pull around us. Was happy we had it. Freaked my wife out like crazy.

On-topic: Mine hasn't failed in any way described but it does like to do weird things like follow a car exiting the freeway and slowing me down to their exit ramp speed for a bit before refocusing on the vehicle actually in front of me.

Off-topic: The box used to do some of this stuff on the windshield is huge and I am constantly looking around it when dealing with pedestrians/traffic off to my front-right. How does this thing compare to versions of this technology in other vehicles/brands? Is this one abnormally large? Does it have vacuum tubes in it?

Also I've seen where the rearview mirror can be flipped around to take up less windshield view on the version without the box...can this be done on this version?

You must be tall - it's outside of my field of vision most of the time.
