The “Overland” package is just Jeep trying to capitalize on the current overlanding craze, but in an out of touch fashion because nothing about that trim is ready for “overland” unsupported vehicle travel. For that, you want a Mojave or Rubicon trim.

I think it’s just the new luxo soccer mom version of what was once called a Sahara.

"Overland" is a former brand owner, and predecessor to the jeep brand, as in "Willys-Overland". It's just to pay homage to the past .

Nuh-uh!

I get that. But 99% of buyers won’t make that connection, or even care if they do.

But you can’t swing a dead cat today without hitting something being called “overland” in the off road and outdoor segment. Hell, even Winnebago is jumping on that bandwagon.

That means money. This trim level is pure marketing.

Did you not get in and drive it first? Did you not check it over to see if it included everything you wanted?

I bought an Overland because I knew most of my travel would be on the road. I found one that was fully loaded and bought it from that dealer.

Then why is there a Grand Cherokee version too? No one overlands in a Grand Cherokee Overland. The Grand Cherokee one came out in '06. Way before the overlanding trend took hold in the US. The logo on the back is even the old overland logo. There was also a patriot overland edition in the '00s. Jeep has been calling vehicles overland for years, before "overlanding" was a thing.

They might be using it now to protect the trademark though, because as you said, it's popular now. Trademark law is basically use it or lose it. If they don't use it, Ford or Chevy could start calling their vehicles overland. Since jeep has a historical connection, it'd be smart to protect it as much as possible before it becomes completely genericized.

I did my research and found an Overland on the showroom floor (literally) and bought it in Feb. 2020 and have been happy ever since. I did not need a Rubicon trim level - I've done various off-road excursions of varying degrees, and my Overland has proven extremely capable. I went the Overland route because (as I've posted elsewhere here) I wanted the nicer interior, navigation, larger screen, upgraded sound system, etc. As others have said - we all want extras or add-ons afterwards, so homework is definitely key BEFORE the purchase. I would never rely solely on what salespeople/dealership staff tell me.

It will do exactly what you want it to do and will do it well. And when you're ready to go off-road, it will do that too.

Use it. Drive it. And if you truly find you are missing something that you absolutely have to have, you can add it. Either OEM or aftermarket.

I assume you loved it when you signed and only found disappointment through the forum or elsewhere online. Ignore that. You just took delivery of a brand new truck. It's exactly what it was when you drove it off the lot.

Cerof, "Bad Info" what?
Rubicon does not come standard with anything on his list including a metal front bumper, sure it has stuff to offroad he says he doesn't need, you can still load an Overland up with a lot to make it top of the line, sure you got LED lights for about a $1000, but so can an Overland . Bad info ....., spec a Ruby with 3.73 gears, 2.71 transfer case, 18" wheels or limited slip rear, it's why they have different levels, different strokes, different folks, I don't need a Ruby but do need the Mojave I got....Jack
You said rubi does not have that stuff, seemed to insinuate you couldn’t get it from the factory. Just want to make sure OP knew you could.

Sounds like you got the right trim. Enjoy it, drive it stock. What mods you NEED will reveal themselves the more you use it.

This is my take and a way to see how others feel about this situation. I recently bought a Jeep Gladiator Overland and the reason I got the Overland was because I need the truck to go to work and sports for my kids. I don’t need to go off road yet. When I when to the dealership they told me the the Overland was top of the line, same as the Rubicon. I thought that Top of the line was almost everything included. My Jeep came with 8.4 “ radio with good speakers, also LEDs inside the Jeep only, Leather seats and black hard top. Now what it does not have that I this a “top of the line” vehicle should have. LED lights outside, Rubicon wheels and suspension, outlet for the bed, metal bumper and all sensors for safety. I think I was taken to the cleaners because if I had gotten a sport with all the upgrades, it wouldn’t come to the amount of money I paid for this truck. Am I over reacting or do I have a point?
There's been a video on YouTube for at least 2 years now highlighting the differences between Sport, Overland, and Rubicon and why each trim is good for certain people.

You didn’t NOT get top of the line. IT is the top of the line in general-The overland is considered the volume leader and optionable with every option except the specific axles and suspension on Mojave and rubicon. If by price point you mean top of the line- then no, but that would only be because you didn’t get the exceptional upgrades on Mojave and rubicon. You can aftermarket them however, and many folks purposely went overland just to custom spec it to be tailored to they’re wants. Not a bad thing at all!
don’t be dismayed by marketing jargon and product placement. It is a thing you know….
