The wimpy little "1-Ton" Toyota pickups of the 80's and 90's had a GVWR of 6000-6200 pound range, which put their payload ratings at roughly 1000 pounds more than that of the Gladiator's. Considering the strength of the drivetrain, the braking, the frame, etc. we can see just how under-rated the Gladiator is compared to the standards of past decades.

At 6200lbs fully laden, one of those old Toyotas would feel completely burdened with any sort of acceleration, braking, or steering. At 6700lbs, my Gladiator will easily do burnouts, has plenty of reserve braking to activate its ABS, and it'll run circles around the Toyota. Another 1000lbs of gear will barely be noticeable as long as I don't put the load up high and raise the center of gravity.

Good morning all,
The reason for my OP was to find out what real folks rigs weigh. Last summer with an aftermarket suspension system I ran cross country loaded with a RTT, Rack, and camping gear for my Rubicon run. The rig drove like a heavy or over loaded rig. I have built Jeep before and was really surprised as how fast they gain weight. JKURR in theend weighed in at 7500# from the starting weight of 4500#. So my goal was to keep the weight in check with this build. Cross the CAT scales last week I was shocked that the rig weighed over 6700#. I did not have a passenger, my overlanding gear or the RTT. Looking closely at the build I can ID weighty components. Link arms need to be strong, in order to get that strength it add weight if steel is used. Rock slider steps are a requirement for this ole guy and his short wife. That adds a fair amount of weight a trade off. Next ventrue bumper ( aluminum) on each end try to curb weight on the ends. So what is left? I have a genesis dual battery set up and an ARB dual cmpressor. 6700+#. adding my overlanding gear I am over 7000lbs.

My littel 3.0 diesel pull the weight OK. Issues come into play when running at high speed 75mph and climbing long steep grades 4-6%. Comression ignition motor are very capable in small displacment to make big power. A byproduct of this potential is heat. The better they run the hotter they get, the hotter they get the better they run right up to the point they meltdown.

So Back to the point of this post is to see what the "norm" is for most Deisel Rigs.

Cheers

For a starting point reference figure, my stock Rubicon diesel comes in at just under 5500 pounds sans driver.

Another thing that added weight, your Dana 60 probably added 100 lbs or so.

Being a nerd and a weight-weenie (see previous post) I weighed all the bits going on and coming off when I did a full suspension job (Clayton springs, Falcon shocks, 8 Metalcloak control arms, MC front drop brackets, Teraflex rear swaybar kit, Teraflex rear trackbar relocation etc). Total net +100 lbs
My aluminum front bumper (replacing stock plastic), Warn winch, wiring etc was net +74 lbs
Various armor bits (including full aluminum belly plate and UHMW previously mentioned) +80 lbs
5 Yoko X-AT 37" tires and Icon Rebound Pro wheels net +109 lbs at the scale (unsprung weight could maybe be a different argument though)
Empty fridge 58 lbs (fully loaded is probably 90 lbs)

It all adds up really fast.

One more thing to note - so far this thread hasn't devolved into a shouting match about insurance, accidents, and liability (as most on this topic eventually do) but you may find that some people who are knowingly over GVWR are reluctant to say so on a public forum. Might want to bear that in mind.

I just made a run to the dump, not sure of the accuracy of the scales, but my 2023 Diesel Willys with a Venturous topper, a bunch of random stuff under the back seat, Hi-Lift jack in the bed, my wife and I (about 320 lbs.) weighed 6020 lbs according to their scales (after dumping off 50 lbs of branches).

Weighed in late 22 during our arctic trip 8900lbs fully loaded with 2 dogs, 2 folks, 15 gallons of exta diesel, 15 gallons of water, all recovery gear, all camping gear, including alucab canopy camper. Figure i could drop 1500lbs just with camping stuff. Regardless, no issues with weight, have done alot to set it up for it. Add external helper bags just cause for towing and when loaded down in back Looking to revalve shocks fir weight during rebuild
