I've had my own front tires toss a rock up and then I ran into it. My wife has had traffic in other lanes toss a rock up, and she hit it, and my son had his Jeep windshield SHOT while he was driving near the river bottoms here.
A tiny nick you can't even see without the right light can cause a crack.
My Gladiator windshield was cracked by a rock thrown from a gravel train traveling in the opposite direction and with a left turn lane between us.

My F150 windshield was mysteriously cracked one day when I went to leave work. Looked a little closer and found a chip behind the rear view mirror.

Can't say it enough... ExoShield is worth the money and have a professional install it for you.

Update:

I googled the part number of what windshield they used to replace mine and came across this thread:

https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/cracked-windshield-club.5935/page-21

Seems like I am not the only person claiming the defroster did it, some of theirs looked like mine with the crack starting at the base of the windshield and going left or right., right above the defroster from all the way back in 2019. With mine being a '20 maybe I had a similar windshield to these people as they were early JLs. I stuck my hand up there while driving in this morning and it does put out quite a bit of hot heat regardless of what temp I had it set on from 70-90. So much so that holding my hand there after a while made me want to stop doing it. So either I am the first Gladiator for it to happen to on here or the first one to put two and two together. Again your experiences may vary but if it is just a crack, especially starting in the middle of your windshield... could just have been the defroster and not a rock.

One thing to note, my new windshield says Jeep on it now versus before when it said Mopar in the lower left corner. The rest of my glass says Mopar. I don't know if that makes a difference or not but it was just an observation. Now if I can just get this glass to fully cure in these frigid temps without an issue I will count myself as lucky!

on my 3rd windshield and took a rock about a week ago; so far the chip has stayed just a chip so I'll live with it until I can't (feels like whatever windscreen Safelite last installed seemed to be a bit tougher?)

I guess I am resurrecting an earlier thread since I was searching for information before commenting on the current GG thread.

But I don't understand what "choice" one has when purchasing a vehicle (JT, Wrangler, whatever) of what kind of windshield it has. From what I have ever seen, there is no option to pick a windshield when purchasing the vehicle. My JTR has GG, the Mojaves have GG. I see many packages on other models in which the GG is part of a much larger group, like those Quick Order packages or Groups in which the GG is just a small part of the overall package.

I guess then that the GG yes/no comments are only directed for purchasing the product if the original glass breaks, correct?

older JTRs, like my MY2021, didn't have Gorilla Glass installed, nor did I have a choice to have it installed from Safelite (I certainly don't recall for my last glass claim)

if my current chip progresses and I need a 4th windshield, I wonder if I can ask for GG? is it really worth the extra cost?

I’m not sure if it’s the ceramic graphene I apply to also the GG windshield, or being GG. But just driving through a good rain washes the entire windshield! Bugs even come off easily even with the washer fluid. I used to have to use a sharp ice scraper here in Florida, to get the bugs off my Chevys.

That is what happened to us years ago with our JKU. We were going through a mountain pass in the snow with the defroster on full. It was cold out, and we were at high altitude (+ 12,000 ft). While the defroster was on full, some of the windshield was collecting snow/ice. The glass cracked in the middle at the bottom without anything hitting it.
We drove it with that crack for a while, but eventually replaced it with OEM non-GG. I am not sure the Gorilla Glass is worth any extra cost. I would take it if it was the same cost, but with as many people report the GG not being any better than normal glass I would not pay a premium for it.

Well, took a rock to the gorilla glass today and have a chip the size of a quarter. Lasted 3,700 miles. I’ll have to figure out what to do with it next week when I’m at work, not spending weekend time figuring it out.

I went my first 50 years of driving without a broken windshield. Then I bought a JT and a Ford Transit Van (Class B) and have had two broken windshields the same year. Guess that's what you get for driving bricks. But I like them both! (The van was a small crack until I made the mistake of turning the defrost on when it was only 7 above. Within seconds the crack went all the way across)

The worst part pf my JT GG replacement was waiting about 2 months. Not many GG with antenna and heater for ACC out there . . .
