Obligatory "CR rates the Ridgeline as the best mid-size pickup" and that's really all I need to have zero respect regarding their opinion on anything automotive.

And before someone comes in to defend, It's the perfect truck for people who need a car with a bed but that doesn't make it a great truck.

My report is the only one that matters! Completely happy driving my brick on wheels. Makes me happy just starting up my Ecodiesel and letting it idle for a few and then feeling the grumbling of it as I pull up the on ramp!

Every year they rate Jeeps at the bottom, but consumer satisfaction is near the top. Go figure.
Its because consumer reports is (supposedly) basing it on objective ratings alone. On the road the wrangler/gladiator with SFA, big off road tires, fiberglass/canvas tops, slow performance, and middling to poor MPG arent going to rate very highly if you are comparing it to other on-road focused vehicles. Its going to be louder, slower, worse driving, poorer braking/turning/acceleration than road focused trucks/suvs for sure so it will pretty much always be at the bottom if thats what you measure it by.

It will always be near the top though in satisfaciton because most people buying jeeps realize all these short comings and are buying it inspite of its on road performance because these compromises make it more fun, more capable, and a lifestyle vehicle.

If you think about it, the Jeep is a terrible vehicle to most people. It is loud as hell from the inside, it sucks gas due to its ridiculous aerodynamics, and compared to other vehicles it’s uncomfortable to sit in. The problem is that I freaking love it. I’ve loved every Jeep I’ve ever owned. I don’t want anything else, well a Challenger Hellcat would be a good second choice.

It's actually the opposite - it's based on subjective ratings by their own CR evaluators and the owners of the vehicles. " ...overall score, [which] combines the results of first-hand testing by Consumer Reports with survey responses from owners."

So the scoring is based on subjectivity of non-Jeep people (CR evaluators) and mysterious Jeep owners - who are they pulsing??

CR: you can take your dorky Subarus and beige Camrys and shove them straight up your pie hole.

The cr testers are just measuring the results of their tests, they don't really provide a "fun to own/drive score". CR uses a road test, reliability, performance, and safety. All things the jeep will do at best average in because it's not a Honda Ridgeline which is designed specifically to tick those boxes

CR rates vehicles based on function. Not soul.

My dad once joked that they would ding a Ferrari because it had a high trunk lift over height.

Our trucks are frankly not terribly practical. As an appliance, I purchased my Gladiator knowing that it was inferior to pretty much all of the Japanese trucks.

Also frankly, if Toyota made a 4 dr pickup with removable doors and roof, I'd have bought that. I have no delusions about Jeep quality. Sorry.

The only reason I felt comfortable spending $60k on a Jeep was that the fantastic resale value protected me if my truck turned out to be a problem and I needed to bail.

Part of the problem seems to be inconsistent quality and a terrible dealer service network. If you get a good one, it seems like it will be as reliable as any modern car.

If you get a bad one, well you are screwed by a dealer network that doesn't seem to understand how to take care of people. I write this as someone who spent 10 years working at a very service oriented dealer in every position from parts driver to service writer to finance manager.

So in the end, I'm not really surprised. Fingers crossed I got a good one.

Yup…if you know anything about a Jeep….this is the truth.

The perennial CR slams on Jeep: rough ride, road noise, gas mileage….three things that most Jeep owners could give not one additional shit over.

What is expected when the testers there typically drive CARS with insulated cabins and cushy suspension rated to tow 3,000 pounds and a payload a family of 4.
I mean, if I tested luxury cars all month and then was suddenly plopped into an off-road truck - I might be unhappy.
However, when you buy a vehicle for what it can do, for its intended purpose, you don't care if it's not a Lexus or Infinity.

If I want a quiet nice ride with almost no road noise and all kinds of creature comforts, a great stereo system, 25 mpg easy, I take my wife's JEEP Grand Cherokee.
