My DeWalt 1/2” impact has removed the most stubborn lugs on 3/4 and 1 ton trucks as well as rusted on trailer lugs. Can’t go wrong with Milwaukee either

Ok... I know there are some "Tim the tool man" or "heidi" types on this forum.

So I need some help/advice/recommendations.

I'm looking to purchase a RECHARGEABLE BATTERY powered Impact Driver or Wrench. The primary usage would be to wrench on the Jeep and other vehicles.

I have a corded and two air powered drivers now. So do I really need a rechargeable ? I think so. It's nice to break away from an extention cord or air hose.... so yeah a nice battery powered inpact might just be the ticket.

What are you guys/gals using ?
Do you feel it's powerful enough for some of the torque specs of the JT ?
18v , 20v or higher ?
3/8 or 1/2 ?
Do I really need to spend $300 ?

I'm sure there are more questions to ask... but you get the idea, so
I would really like to hear your answers, input, experience and get some recommendations.

Milwaukee all day long. I have a small 150 foot lb for small stuff, and a short mid torque that does around 850 foot lbs. it makes jobs on the gladiator a breeze to have cordless impacts.

I came across this channel a few months ago and have gone down the rabbit hole of power tools. It’s addicting! ?

The channel convinced me to go with the Ridgid subcompact impact wrench as he tested it to 500ft-lbs of breakaway torque. But I also haven’t been able to find those results replicated anywhere else.

so back to: subcompact or mid-toque?!

Mid torque if you are only going to buy one. The issue with his channel is these are all new perfect nuts and bolts that haven't seized with rust crud or abuse.

no pic avail at the moment, but I've been using a Milwaukee 1/2" HD impact and love it. The only downside is it's size, but damn is she powerful. I use it for all tire rotations on the regular and it was a god send when I installed the lift. I'm a Milwaukee fan boy so that's why I chose it, but am so because of the faith and experience I've had with their tools over the years and never have issues. Good luck.

I have a low profile 1/2” mid torque Milwaukee that fits almost everywhere. M18. It does around 850 foot lbs. I haven’t found a bolt on the gladiator yet that exceeds 210. And it has the removal and install setting that is designed to not over torque or loose fasteners.

Well for my 2 cents worth I've had plenty of air tools owned and worked a body shop for tears before buy my first dealership. I've tried most and always come back to Dewalt my techs mostly use dewalt for ease and convince of no air house we use the 20v. The plus for us is the same battery works on all the tools we take on the trail impact ,ratchet, air compressor etc. I'm sure theres some cheaper quality tools out there I just haven't found any with as much torque and reliability as Dewalt has given us.

Does nobody use Craftsman anymore? I have professional air tools at a friends house in my tool box but purchased these the other day.

Have not really used the impact yet but I figured it would be good enough for lug nuts at 165 lb-ft, and it's smaller/lighter

Craftsman is made by the parent of DeWalt as their 2nd tier tools (think Ryobi compared to Milwaukee). They are now the house brand of Lowes and are fine tools but just not as popular.

The one thing with all these ftlbs claims is they don't translate to real world. I've had a 450 ftlbs mid torque not budge a 200 ftlbs suspension bolt. When they report these max claims they are using the highest fresh charge battery on a cold tool and impacting this for who knows how long to get there.

I use Dewalt XR 20V cordless tools.

Editing to add: Dewalt also has a cordless air inflator/deflator. Bought it last month and can confirm that it has worked flawlessly for me.

Thats cool I didnt know they were under DeWalt. I have DeWalt for all my home construction tools, saws, etc...and am a fan of their stuff Most my automotive stuff is Matco, some snap on, but Craftsman is just a lot cheaper and still good quality without the cost. 80K in automotive tools in a box is enough - no need for that in the Jeep.

I have the Harbor Fright cordless impact gun, being a cheap bastage.

Works fine, for my needs.

They have several cordless models available, which one do you have and what is the "tuffest" job you were able to do with it ? Hase it failed to work / "loosen" anything ?

If you want 1 battery powered impact, the current king is by far the DeWalt 891/2. It will take every bolt off the JT and it's only a midsize so it fits in to more spots easier. There is also the big bruiser of the DeWalt high torque 900 (not 901) but for the JT it's over kill.

The torque test channel on YouTube tested all off the brands and the current gen Dewalts just mop the floor with everyone else right now.

I've been using it for just about everything, Tractor work, JEEP stuff, so far it has not let me down, mostly wheel swaps. Haven't found a task yet it can't do, especially for the price. Breaker bar gettin' rusty!

Do you have a pic of the ridgid ... I was going to check and see it they had impacts... I own a Ridgid hammer drill and a "home project" style inpact that takes bits.
So I already have 2/2mah and 2/5mah batteries.

For home use, I'm a fan of Bauer cordless tools. They have quite a range now, incuding a 1/2" impact wrench recently released. Generally cheaper than the competition and the only issue I've had is reminding my son NOT to leave the batteriies in the charger for days.
