So I'm running into a major issue with my local Jeep dealer (Brown's Dulles Jeep - Dulles, VA). On my 2020 Gladiator Rubicon there is notable rust spots on the hood on both edges of the hood. After taking it in for a warranty claim and following their instructions, long and short of it is that I'm told they'll repaint it, and not replace the hood; which is insane to me since we all know rust is cancer and doesn't go away, and not to mention it's not 2 years old and still in warranty clearly.

It all started once I called for an appointment and they stated I had to go to a dealer which had their own body shop, Chrysler rules, which I debunked when I called another local dealer (Jeep dealer in Tysons Corner, VA) and the warranty coordinator there called BS and said she's reported that dealer to Chrysler as well for basically getting out of doing work, increasing their workload etc., but was apologetic and said worse case talk to her if need be.

Back to the originating dealer, I went and jumped through their hoops of their selected shop, got an estimate to replace, in which case waited a week or more, then upon checking with the shop was informed this is the game they play in dragging their feet and also want an estimate for a cost to repair, and want to spend less. Once I learned this I pressured the dealer more and explained repainting was unacceptable and the hood needs to be replaced. So the warranty coordinator basically deflects then, and says I need to talk to Chrysler/@JeepCares and so I opened up my case. After speaking with Chrysler yesterday, they informed me that each dealer is independently owned and reserves the right to fix how they see fit (WTF) but I could try another dealership, and offered to give me other dealer info locally, as if my internet was down and stopped working.

I am calmly trying to remain sane but it's becoming more and more challenging at this point. The service I've received at this dealership and the blame game and buck-passing is unreal, and as I stated to them, never once have I ever had an issue with a Toyota/Lexus I owned and been at a dealer where they told me to solve it with the manufacturer; BECAUSE THATS THE DEALERS JOB! Anyhow, I calmly left a message for the dealer general manager yesterday afternoon in a last ditch effort to try and resolve things before going elsewhere, but the "service" is absolutely ridiculous. Cheers, we all need one after this:beer:

Understand your frustration, but it is their discretion how they want to repair it for a warranty claim.

If you look in your warranty booklet, there is a section stating that they can new replace, repair, rework, use salvage and reconditioned parts as they see fit.

Aluminum has it's own corrosion issues and is usually a galvanic type corrosion from when dissimilar metals are introduced. If there is iron or steel dust contaminates on the aluminum before paint prep, it will corrode.

I think repainting is standard with the rust issue that the JLs have had for a while now. I would expect the same for the hood. As long as the shop knows what they're doing, there's no problem with removing rust and repainting.

I wouldn't have a problem with a good re-paint. Especially with aluminum. It might be better than new.

This assumes they prep the corroded area (Its not rust if its aluminum) properly.

What is the reputation of the body shop that will be fixing it? That would play a big part in my decision.

I'm not really sure but I don't have a say where it gets done; I was told we use this shop, go here for your estimate. I've called another dealer and I'd be surprised if I get a call back from dealer #1's manager, but let's hope I'm wrong.

The other dealer may not call you back. But if you make an appointment and bring it in, they have to deal with you. Its a hassle. But it might be worth it.

I understand the galvanic corrosion possibility, but your hood is Aluminum and not "rusting". Most likely a prep issue. Having a body shop repaint IMO would be standard recourse and if done right would probably be better than the OEM robots. I wouldn't hesitate to have this done. Just make sure they properly color match the side cowls and grille.

We had similar Problems in the German Jeep Forum with JL Doors and Hinges (where they make contact). Jeep also just repainted doors and not replace...?

It kinda bubbles because of chemical reaction I reckon in the door case. We call it Alufraß (aluminum eating???). On the guys Jeep you could sadly see a super slight difference in the paint job. In the shade no issue but when the light hits it, it refracts differently.
Some of the other guys with similar problems put like a plastic boundary between the two surfaces, had each individually painted before. They went to private Specialists, and they seem to do a great job with the color codes and tools to calculate the actual real color needed.
