I have 23 rubicon and she has a 23 Highlander. The electronics and the overall tech in the Highlander is pure garbage. While it’s a tad comfier I can’t stand to drive it compared to my jeep.
Highlander doesnt beep when you lock it it only flashes lights
Jeep I can leave it running and step out and still lock my car while keys are outside and it’s running
Highlander has remote start but as soon as you unlock the door it just shuts off
The dash is clunky and not user friendly
Especially switching stations on satellite radio

If the 4Runner is similar then my view of Toyota just went to crap

I didn't like the beep or flash (very annoying when camping or out on a trail) when I unlock/touch door handles, so I turned both off in the settings.

We had a Tacoma as a rental in Alaska this summer... it was a pain in the rear to get into and out of, seats were too low to floor, and steering wheel too close to legs... Gutless v6, no removable or opening roof... etc...

Boss just got me a TRD Offroad 4x4 2023 Tacoma. Need it for work on the railroad. ( sand, mud etc ). The infotainment is straight ancient garbage. 6 speed auto is lethargic as hell. The Jeep 8 speed spoiled me.

I am sure the new 2024 will address some of these complaints.

That beeping on lock is customizable for most modern cars. And I bet that Highlander will keep motoring for 100k miles more than any of our new Jeeps. But apples to oranges. I have no inkling to buy any Toyota.

Toyota infotainment tech has always been behind the industry. Even BT versions. That being said, it always works, can't say the same for other mnfrs. My guess is they are choosing to be behind the times, proven tech is more reliable than new tech after all. Kinda what they are known for... working.

Android Auto cuts out constantly in my brand new Tacoma. It has never in my Gladiator. Does it with both an S23 and a Pixel 7. So far Toyota tech is less reliable for me. Not to mention the SD, blurry backup cam and screen.

Clarity of the backup cam on the JT is the best I have ever seen - even compared to Grand Cherokee and perhaps a bit better than our JLU.
Colors are more accurate - on other vehicles the saturation level is off making the colors look funky.

Not always. I bought a 2019 Sienna, and the infotainment unit went tango uniform a week after purchase. They gave me a new Sienna instead of trying to fix it.

That being said, I have well over 100,000 miles on this Sienna without a hiccup.

Agree.

BTW my plate lights harness came back....dude fixed it.... crazy improvement backing up at night with the relay cutting out the plate lights while in reverse. The problem was the pins weren't shoved into the connector enough. I saw it....tried to push them forward they didn’t budge. Figured this is his problem not mine. Maybe you can see it maybe you can't in this pic. Pins 1 and 4. 2 and 3 connect to nothing. The guy was pretty standup as you can see in my ebay screenshot.

I won't forget you offering to fix it @ShadowsPapa

Toyota has always taken a slow approach to their vehicle tech and they revel in that fact
Acura too. ( Honda ). It's very odd.....the Japanese are kings of tech...very forward and advanced.....except in their automobiles.

When I bought my wife a brand new 2014 MDX...the infotainment was worse than my 2010 GT500. Miss my GT500 btw....

As i beat around the idea of a new jt or other truck i can safely say that jeeps user interface and infotainment is leaps and bounds ahead of just about every vehicle. I’ve looked at recently. The only one that I think was a fair comparison was the 23 GMC Canyon.

To some degree, I understand why they do it. The Japanese brands are slow to jump on new tech and trends and tend to let other vehicle makers run out the gate first and learn their mistakes before moving forward. They were one of the last major automakers to integrate Android Auto and Apple Car Play.

This is part of the reason Toyota has been resistant to going full EV and push Hybrid or Hydrogen as a better alternative
